Twitter and Square CEO Jack Dorsey has donated $10 million to Project 100 which will give $1,000 in cash to 10,000 families who have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Project 100 is a joint effort between nonprofits GiveDirectly, Propel and Stand for Children, and has raised nearly $84 million since April.

It aims to raise $100 million in order to provide cash gifts to 100,000 American families. Other donors to Project 100 include Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, billionaires Steve Ballmer, Bill Gates, Sergey Brin and MacKenzie Bezos.

Dorsey also donated $10 million this month to help prisons in the US fight the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The donation was given to criminal justice advocacy group REFORM Alliance that would buy 10 million face masks and personal protective equipment (PPEs) for prisoners and other employees.

“$10mm to @REFORM Alliance to get PPE to every prison and jail in America, all towards their mission of reforming the criminal justice system,” Dorsey tweeted. The funds come from Dorsey’s #startsmall initiative, which has $1 billion in total, given by Dorsey in April using equity from his mobile payment company Square. So far, Dorsey who has a net worth at $4.8 billion, has distributed $85 million worth of Square stock to more than 50 nonprofits since April.

OnePlus 5, 5T Android 10 Updates are Here: An Impressive Feat for a 3-Year-Old Phone

OnePlus 5, 5T Android 10 Updates are Here: An Impressive Feat for a 3-Year-Old Phone

If indications in the smartphone world hold true, this may be the last major update that the OnePlus 5 and 5T will be getting.

  • News18.com
  • Last Updated: May 27, 2020, 5:33 AM IST

OnePlus is impressively rolling out Android 10 to its three-years-old smartphone generation, the OnePlus 5 and 5T. The update is yet to be officially announced by OnePlus, but users of its official forum have reported that they are indeed receiving the update for the latest version of Android. While the update is arriving with roughly four months to go for Android 11’s expected release, users of the OnePlus 5 and 5T smartphones will take heart from the fact that a device lineup that is three years old was issued the latest Android version and its newest features, which many brands fail to deliver.

According to reports about the update, the latest version of OxygenOS releasing on the two phones includes the typical enhancements that are part of the Android 10 feature set. These include a deeper, system-level implementation of dark mode, full screen gesture operation mode, granular privacy control including clearer control over device location permissions, and the likes. On top of these, OnePlus is said to have implemented its own layer of changes to the latest version of OxygenOS. These include spam message filtering, camera and gaming enhancements and other custom features.

With the OnePlus 5T set to turn three years old soon, Android 10 is likely to be the last major update that it receives in its lifetime. While OnePlus has not made any official announcement regarding the matter so far, it is likely that the company will continue to offer incremental security and service updates for a stipulated period. Smartphones generally run on a two to three-year upgrade cycle, during which it receives all major software updates as well. However, this has also been a bone of contention for many devices, with one notable case being that of Xiaomi and its ill-fated Android 10 upgrade for the Mi A3.

With OnePlus not having announced the Android 10 upgrade for the OnePlus 5 and 5T as yet, it is likely that the update is being phased as of now. Hence, if you are among the users of the two phones, it would prove to be prudent to wait until the update is automatically pushed to your device. Given the pace of phased updates, this should not take too long.

Windows 10 May Get a Big Update Soon: Here is How to Pause if You Don’t Want Anything to Break

(Image: Microsoft)

The recent history of Windows 10 updates doesn’t exactly infuse a lot of confidence, considering its broken critical functionality, including internet connectivity for a lot of users.

  • Last Updated: May 25, 2020, 10:39 AM IST

This week could be an important one for Windows 10 users. Microsoft is set to release the biggest update for Windows 10 PCs for far this year, and it is expected to be rolled out this week. It is expected that the Windows 10 May 2020 update, as it is known, will bring the new Chromium-based Edge web browser, end of support for 32-bit versions, new icons for system apps such as Explorer, improvements for graphics performance and the ability to reinstall Windows 10 from the cloud, among other things. That’s all fantastic news but hang on for a moment.

The recent history of Windows 10 updates doesn’t exactly infuse a lot of confidence, considering its broken critical functionality, including internet connectivity for a lot of users. With the new update on the horizon, you might want to hang on for a while and not update—just to see what feedback the new update gets from other users who do. You can pause updates from downloading and installing on your Windows 10 PC for up to 7 days at a time or select a time frame up to 35 days to stay update-free. Here is how to do it.

Click on the Windows 10 icon on the bottom left of the screen to open the start menu. Here, select the Settings menu, which opens a new app window. Here, either scroll down to find Windows Update or search for it. This opens the update page, which shows the list of pending updates if any, and the download as well as install status for each of these. Look a bit further down on this page, and you will see the “Pause Updates for 7 days” option. This is the ticket. You can select this option to pause the automatic download and install of the Windows 10 updates for up to a week at a time, and you need to keep repeating it for the paused situation to continue.

If you want a bit more freedom in terms of selecting the window in which you don’t want Windows 10 to update, you must scroll a bit further down on the Windows Update page and select the Advanced option. This takes you to a further set of options, and here you can select a date up to 35 days from that time, to keep Windows Update from doing any automatic installations.

Just recently, Windows 10 users have had bad luck with the updates rolled out for their PCs. Over the past couple of months, we have had the KB4554364 update and the KB4549951 update for instance, which saw users reporting on Microsoft’s own community forums about errors with the installation, some report serious performance hit, some say critical apps are no longer working while some report the updates broke Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functionality. This can be a big problem for people working from home right now and have a PC or laptop they rely on extensively right now to get work done.

Work From Home Buying Guide: Best Laptops Under Rs 40,000 With Windows 10 & Chrome OS

E-commerce is open again. This means you can now order from Amazon and Flipkart and the orders will be delivered to you in all parts of the country, except in containment zones. This must come as a great relief for those who suddenly shifted to the world from home routine ahead of the lockdown to flatten the COVID curve, a few weeks ago. Chances are, you may not have had a good laptop or PC at home, for it perhaps wasn’t really a critical requirement thus far. But now, you can buy a new laptop or PC to rock the work from home situation, and not be bogged down by an aging and sluggish PC, a bad keyboard, a cracked screen or something you were simply bored of. It is also expected that work from home will be quite a regular thing for a lot of workers in a lot of companies, which means you should be armed with a good computing device.

Do not make the same mistake again of thinking the smartphone can be a PC replacement, because when it really comes down to it, you will need a laptop to get genuine work done. Here are some of the best budget laptops, some running Windows 10 and some Google Chromebook options, which you must add to your arsenal of work from home tools. So that this purchase remains light on your pocket, we are looking at laptops under the Rs 40,000 price point—to get the perfect blend between performance and longevity without breaking the bank. Plus, they should look good too.

HP Chromebook x360 - 12b-ca0006tu

HP Chromebook x360 – 12b-ca0006tu

Around Rs32,990

The biggest advantage of the Google Chrome OS software for computing devices is the sheer simplicity of everything. It is incorrect to assume that you must be locked into the Google ecosystem to be able to use a Chromebook—the variety of apps available for the Chrome OS is as wide as Android phones. That is why the full-fledged Play Store is also available on the Chromebooks. Microsoft’s Word, Excel and PowerPoint apps? The Spotify app? Video streaming apps. You name it, and the whole wide world of productivity, utility and entertainment apps are available. For any Android phone user, the switch could prove to be close to seamless—and that is a genuine value addition. In fact, this works brilliantly with the Intel Celeron N4000 processor with 4GB RAM, 64GB internal storage and a card slot if you wish to use that for adding more storage space. What’s most interesting is the square-is aspect ratio of the 12-inch display, and the hinge allows it to be folded all the way back into a sort of a tablet mode. Windows machines have never performed as well on this sort of hardware.

Dell Inspiron 14 5490

Dell Inspiron 14 5490

Around Rs 35,585

This started out with a price tag above the Rs 40,000 mark but price corrections have now pushed this beneath that virtual ceiling we have for this buying advice. That means you get the newer 10th generation Intel Core i3-10110U processor with 4GB RAM and a fast 512GB SSD. There is a 14-inch Full HD display which should do well for most productivity and entertainment tasks. The keyboard is not backlit though—perhaps you need to keep that in mind in case working in a dimly lit room is your thing. Dell’s ExpressCharge Boost tops up a fully discharged battery to 35% in 20 minutes and up to 80% in 60 minutes—great if you need to splash and dash. Then there is the Dell Mobile Connect app which pairs your iPhone or Android smartphone with your laptop, which mirrors most things from your phone on the laptop itself, thereby reducing distractions.

Lenovo IdeaPad 330

Lenovo IdeaPad 330

Around Rs 19,990

If you really are on a strict budget, the Lenovo IdeaPad 330 (model number: 330-15IKB) could be a steady enough pick. Do not expect this to be powerful or do anything more than basic computing, but what you get is a comfortable 15.6-inch HD display. This runs an Intel Celeron processor, along with 4GB RAM. There is a 1TB hard drive, and these basic specs are really all you should expect at this price. While there are many similarly priced laptops that don’t give you a preloaded Windows 10 operating system, this one does—and that is very important. A keyboard that is well laid out and the build quality doesn’t really betray its budget price tag.

Acer Aspire 5 A515-43

Acer Aspire 5 A515-43

Around Rs 38,369

This started out in life with a price tag around Rs 50,000 and that means you get specifications which are quite powerful. This runs the AMD Ryzen 5 3500U quad-core processor (for some reason, many potential laptop buyers still have a bit of mistrust towards AMD machines). This has 4GB of RAM to get Windows 10 and your apps purring along. What should also make a difference is the 512GB SSD, which will speed up performance. You get a 15.6-inch Full HD IPS display. The keyboard isn’t backlit. The laptop weighs around 1.8kg. You should probably also consider this if you are taken in by the large screen goodness of the Lenovo IdeaPad S145 (model number 81W800FXIN).

Lenovo IdeaPad S145

Lenovo IdeaPad S145

Around Rs 35,010

We are specifically talking about the Lenovo IdeaPad S145 (model number 81W800FXIN) which runs the Intel Core i3-1005G1 processor with 4GB RAM and 256GB SSD. It looks like it means business and has the sort of serious personality that most good productivity centric machines have. This is ideal if you prefer large displays—this has a 15.6-inch Full HD screen for you to work on. Not the lightest, tipping the scales at 1.85kg, but that’s the compromise for a large screen laptop. You will quite like the keyboard, which has the sort of inspiration from the more expensive ThinkPad laptops, which make these genuinely good to type on. Lenovo also doesn’t clutter Windows 10 too much by preloading apps, which should also be good in the long run.

HP Notebook - 15s-du0093tu

HP Notebook – 15s-du0093tu

Around Rs38,990

And this price point, you get multiple laptops running the older generation Intel Core processors as well as some Celeron versions. However, this HP Notebook – 15s-du0093tu should hold up well with the Intel Core i3-8145U processor, with 8GB RAM and a 1TB hard drive. What you get is a 15-inch Full HD display, Windows 10 preloaded and six months of 25GB bundled Dropbox storage. This weighs 1.74kg and is 19.9mm thick. You also get a fingerprint sensor as an added authentication layer to keep your data safe. The HP Fast Charge feature charges a fully discharged laptop battery to 50% in 45 minutes, which should be handy in case you need to get stuff done in a hurry and don’t have access to power at the time. Oh, and the keyboard is backlit too.

Microsoft on Tuesday announced the availability of its collaboration device Surface Hub 2S in India. The all-in-one digital whiteboard, meeting platform, and teamwork collaborative computing device designed for the modern workplace is priced at Rs 11,89,999, which includes a Surface Hub 2 Camera and a Surface Hub 2 Pen.

The product will be available via authorised Hub resellers, Microsoft said, adding that the Steelcase Roam mobile stand priced at Rs 1,17,500 is also available via these authorised outlets. The 4K+ 50-inch multi-touch display offers a canvas to co-create with the pen and touch experience, and the highest resolution compared to any device in its class. It is 40 percent lighter, and offers 50 percent faster graphics performance than the original Surface Hub, Microsoft said. As an elegant, portable, and interactive device, Surface Hub 2S harnesses the full power of Microsoft — Windows 10, Microsoft Teams, Office 365, Microsoft Whiteboard, and the intelligent cloud — to unlock productivity.

“We’ve expanded our Surface family to include not just devices designed for individuals, but also devices purpose-built for teams. In view of the current environment and more teams working remotely, the Surface Hub 2S seamlessly blends into any workspace,” Rajiv Sodhi, Chief Operating Officer, Microsoft India. “For businesses looking to bridge the gap and address different workstyles, the Surface Hub 2S is the perfect addition to enhance productivity, and as a boost to turn innovative ideas to reality,” said Sodhi.

Surface Hub 2S gives teams the flexibility to come together wherever they work best. It takes something that has long been a fixture in the conference room — the shared screen — and transforms it into a mobile computer, built for teams. Surface Hub 2S also features the thinnest edge and smallest bezels in its class, integrating seamlessly into any office environment. In fact, its display is 60 percent thinner than its predecessor, claimed the company.

Moto Razr Android 10 Update Brings New Features For Quick View Display

Moto Razr Android 10 Update Brings New Features For Quick View Display

The new Moto Razr is getting the Android 10 update which brings some new features to the outer display as well as some new camera features.

  • Last Updated: May 12, 2020, 6:34 PM IST

The Moto Razr has been one of the most hyped and exciting smartphones from the company in recent times. Now while the pricing hasn’t been very attractive and there have been questions regarding the build of the handset, it is still an iconic gadget.

Surprisingly, the handset was launched with Android 9 Pie, but the company has finally started rolling Android 10 for the foldable device. Of course, the update is not going to solve the hardware quirks, but it should bring some respite to owners. Apart from bringing all the new features including dark mode, enhanced permissions, gesture navigation options and so on, it also expands some functionality of the device, specifically the outer display.

With the new update, the outer ‘Quick View’ display now supports more apps. The outer display now lets you use Google Maps with navigation, control music on streaming apps like Spotify and YouTube Music, access favorite contacts to make calls and even reply to messages using the new Quick View keyboard or Smart Replies.

The camera also gets some new well-needed features including group selfies and portrait modes when the phone is shut. New gestures like swiping right or twisting your wrist can now quickly fire up the camera app.

Motorola says that the update should start rolling out to all-users by mid-May, so expect the update to arrive any time soon.

Realme Narzo 10, Narzo 10A to Launch Today: Here’s How to Watch Live Stream

After multiple delays, Realme is finally going to launch its new budget centric smartphone series, Narzo. Targeted at the younger audience, the series was expected to launch in March but was delayed due to the ongoing coronavirus lockdown. The Realme Narzo 10 is expected to be a rebranded version of the Realme 6i that launched in Myanmar earlier this year, while the Realme Narzo 10A is expected to be a rebranded version of the Realme C3.

The two handsets will be launched at an online event that is scheduled for 12.30 PM IST. The event will be streamed on the company’s official YouTube and other social media channels. You can also check out the stream that we have embedded below:

REALME NARZO 10

It is being speculated that the Realme Narzo 10 will be a rebranded version of the Realme 6i that launched in Myanmar earlier this year. So we can expect a MediaTek Helio G80 processor featuring two Cortex-A75 cores clocked at 2GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.8GHz. It will also come with a 6.5-inch HD+ (720×1,600 pixels) display with an aspect ratio of 20:9, and a quad-camera setup at the back with a 48-megapixel primary sensor.

As for the front camera, it will be a 16-megapixel sensor placed inside a waterdrop notch. The handset is also going to feature a large 5,000mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging. The Narzo 10 is also said to include up to 128GB of onboard storage, a microSD card slot (up to 256GB), USB Type-C port, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS/A-GPS, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It should arrive with Android 10 out of the box with Realme UI on top.

REALME NARZO 10A

The Realme Narzo 10A is expected to include a MediaTek Helio G70 processor and a 6.5-inch HD+ display. This one will have a triple camera with a 12-megapixel primary sensor, and a 5-megapixel selfie camera. Other features include a 5,000mAh battery and a fingerprint scanner on the back. This one will also come with Android 10 out-of-the-box with Realme UI on top.

While there is no confirmation from Realme, it is speculated that the Narzo 10 will be priced under Rs 15,000. As mentioned before, the Nazro 10 could be a rebranded version of Realme 6i that retails at MMK 249,900 (Rs 13,000 approx) for the base 3GB + 64GB storage variant. There is also a 4GB + 128GB storage variant which is priced at MMK 299,900 (Rs 16,000 approx) in Myanmar.

The Realme Narzo 10A is being called as a rebranded version of the Realme C3 which has already launched in Thailand. If that holds true, it could launch at a similar price which is THB 3,999 (Rs 9,000 approx) for the 3GB + 32GB variant.

Realme Narzo 10 Specs: MediaTek Helio G80 SoC Confirmed by Company

Realme has confirmed via Twitter that its upcoming smartphone, the Realme Narzo 10, will be powered by MediaTek’s recently unveiled Helio G80 SoC. While the Helio G series is typically aimed at gaming devices, the Helio G80 is seen as a processor that may cater to the budget and mid-range gaming segments of smartphones, This gives users a fair idea regarding what may be expected of the Realme Narzo 10 smartphone.

In terms of capabilities, the Helio G80 SoC comes with MediaTek’s HyperEngine gaming mode that will boost the peak performance core of the processor in order to give the best possible gaming performance to the best of its abilities. The Helio G80 also has a dedicated AI co-processor, which has pretty much become the norm for any smartphone processor in the market at the moment. However, the Helio G80 will not be able to support displays richer than full HD+ resolution, which is what the Realme Narzo 10’s display resolution would be. The Helio G80 can also record up to 2K videos at 30fps, which clarifies that the Narzo 10 will not feature 4K video recording.

The Realme Narzo 10 is already confirmed to feature a 48-megapixel quad rear camera setup, a 5,000mAh battery and a physical fingerprint sensor at the back. The display size will be 6.5 inches and feature a waterdrop notch to house the front camera. All of this lines the Realme Narzo 10 to be a fairly run of the mill smartphone. However, given how competitive the budget and mid-range smartphone space typically is in India, it remains to be seen if the new ‘Narzo’ series of devices manage to find footing in the country once lockdown protocol is lifted, and smartphone sales resume in India.
