Alexa, Call Everyone for Dinner: Amazon Echo Devices Can Now be an Intercom in Your Home

Calls for dinner. Heads up for a shopping trip. Popcorn is ready. All these messages can now be sent over the Alexa-enabled Echo speakers, to everyone, at the same time.

Amazon is giving the Alexa smart assistant even more capabilities as part of the latest set of software updates for the Echo line of smart speakers and smart displays. Among the new updates is one feature that could be very relevant for homes that may have multiple Alexa speakers installed. The Drop In feature, which you may have already used, is now getting a wider scope than before. Instead of being able to connect with one other Echo speaker at a time as it did so far, you can now create groups of Echo speakers and then use the Drop In capabilities to intercom your message to the entire group—at the same time.

Calls for dinner. Heads up for a shopping trip. Popcorn is ready. All these messages can now be sent over the Alexa-enabled Echo speakers. “Customers can now use group Drop In to instantly connect all of their Echo devices into a group conversation. Simply say, “Alexa, drop in on all devices” to start an audio intercom call to have conversations like “what should we have for dinner?” or “does anyone want anything from grocery store?” says Amazon.

The Reminders feature has also received similar functionality, and you can now choose to either have a reminder notification on one Echo speaker or Echo smart display, or you can choose “All Devices”. You need to open the Alexa app on your phone, go to Settings -> Reminders and select “Announce on all devices”. No chance of missing a reminder now, is there? At this time, the Reminders feature is limited to the US users.

At this time, Amazon sells a variety of Echo smart speakers and smart displays in India. The Echo Dot (Rs 3,499), the Echo Input (Rs 3,999), the Echo (Rs 9,799), Echo Plus (Rs 9,999), Echo Show 5 (Rs 5,999), the Echo Show 8 (Rs 7,999), the Echo Show (Rs 16,999) and the Echo Studio (Rs 22,999) are on sale in India.

OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro Open Sale Delayed, Special Limited Sale Announced For May 29

OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro Open Sale Delayed, Special Limited Sale Announced For May 29

OnePlus is facing production issues in India and has delayed the open sale of its new OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro smartphones.

  • Last Updated: May 28, 2020, 3:48 PM IST

OnePlus had announced that its new OnePlus 8 series would finally go on open sale in India from May 29. Due to some production issues last week, the sale has been postponed. OnePlus made the announcement on its forums saying that the full-fledged sale will not be happening this Friday.

However a special limited sale across online and offline channels for the OnePlus 8 has been announced that will be held at 12PM on May 29. Expect limited stocks of the handsets during this sale. Pre-order customers who booked either of the phone on Amazon India or via OnePlus’ official channels will now have to wait to make the final purchase. The company hasn’t confirmed as to when the official open sale will begin in India.

“Although we were looking to have 29th May as our open sales date for the OnePlus 8 Series 5G, due to unforeseen circumstances, our production was temporarily halted last week and has altered our sales plan. Because of this, we had to reschedule our date for open sales in India” said Vikas Agarwal, General Manager, OnePlus India in a forum post.

Last week the company had hosted a special early access sale on Amazon India to sell limited quantities of the OnePlus 8. All three memory and storage variants, as well as all colour options, were offered in limited quantities during the special sale.

The OnePlus 8 comes with a 6.55-inch Fluid AMOLED display with 20:9 aspect ratio, HDR 10+ support, and 3D corning gorilla glass. It offers support for sRGB, and Display P3 colour profiles and a 90Hz refresh rate display. The panel operates at FHD+ resolution. Another important feature is the battery of OnePlus 8. The device offers a 4,300mAh battery, and what more, it is said to provide 13% more capacity than its predecessor, OnePlus 7T. There is also a triple-camera setup at the back. The primary camera is a 48-megapixel powered by the Sony IMX586 sensor just like last year. The rest is a 16-megapixel sensor with an ultrawide lens, and the third one is a 2-megapixel macro camera.

The OnePlus 8 Pro is packed with a 6.78-inch Fluid AMOLED display with a 3168×1440-pixel resolution and a 19:8:9 aspect ratio. Interestingly, the device comes with a faster 120Hz refresh rate. The OnePlus 8 Pro also offers the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor with up to 12GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage. There is a quad-camera setup taking care of the photography needs, as well as 4,510mAh battery.

The base model of the OnePlus 8 (6GB RAM + 128GB storage) is priced at Rs 41,999 while the 8GB + 128GB storage model is priced at Rs 44,999. The top 12GB + 256GB variant has been priced at Rs 49,999. On the other hand, the OnePlus 8 Pro 8GB + 128GB variant has a price tag of Rs 54,999. The top-end 12GB RAM + 256GB storage model for the OnePlus 8 Pro will be available for Rs 59,999.

Trump to Issue Executive Order In Wake of Twitter Fact-Checking His Tweets

Twitter on Tuesday for the first time-tagged Trump’s tweets about unsubstantiated claims of fraud in mail-in voting with a warning prompting readers to fact check the posts.

  • Reuters
  • Last Updated: May 28, 2020, 11:14 AM IST

U.S. President Donald Trump will sign an executive order on social media companies on Thursday, White House officials said after Trump threatened to shut down websites he accused of stifling conservative voices. The officials gave no further details. It was unclear how Trump could follow through on the threat of shutting down privately-owned companies including Twitter Inc. The company declined to comment.

The dispute erupted after Twitter on Tuesday for the first time-tagged Trump’s tweets about unsubstantiated claims of fraud in mail-in voting with a warning prompting readers to fact check the posts. Separately, a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington on Wednesday upheld the dismissal of a lawsuit by a conservative group and right-wing YouTube personality against Google, Facebook, Twitter and Apple accusing them of conspiring to suppress conservative political views.

In an interview with Fox News Channel on Wednesday, Facebook’s Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said censoring a platform would not be the “right reflex” for a government worried about censorship. Fox played a clip of the interview and said it would be aired in full on Thursday. Facebook left Trump’s post on mail-in ballots on Tuesday untouched. The American Civil Liberties Union said the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution limits any action Trump could take. Facebook and Google declined to comment. Apple did not respond to a request for comment.

“Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservatives voices. We will strongly regulate, or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen,” Trump said in a pair of additional posts on Twitter on Wednesday. The president, a heavy user of Twitter with more than 80 million followers, added: “Clean up your act, NOW!!!!”

Republican Trump has an eye on the November election. “Big Tech is doing everything in their very considerable power to CENSOR in advance of the 2020 Election,” Trump tweeted on Wednesday night. “If that happens, we no longer have our freedom.”

STRONGEST THREAT YET

Trump’s threat is his strongest yet within a broader conservative backlash against Big Tech. Shares of both Twitter and Facebook fell on Wednesday. Last year the White House circulated drafts of a proposed executive order about anti-conservative bias which never gained traction. The Internet Association, which includes Twitter and Facebook among its members, said online platforms do not have a political bias and they offer “more people a chance to be heard than at any point in history.”

Asked during Twitter’s annual meeting on Wednesday why the company decided to affix the label to Trump’s mail-in ballot tweets, General Counsel Sean Edgett said decisions about handling misinformation are made as a group. “We have a group and committee of folks who take a look at these things and make decisions on what’s getting a lot of visibility and traction …,” he said.

In recent years Twitter has tightened its policies amid criticism that its hands-off approach allowed fake accounts and misinformation to thrive. Tech companies have been accused of anti-competitive practices and violating user privacy. Apple, Google, Facebook and Amazon face antitrust probes by federal and state authorities and a U.S. congressional panel. Republican and Democratic lawmakers, along with the U.S. Justice Department, have been considering changes to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, a federal law largely exempting online platforms from legal liability for the material their users post. Such changes could expose tech companies to more lawsuits.

Republican Senator Josh Hawley, a frequent critic of Big Tech companies, sent a letter to Twitter Chief Executive Jack Dorsey asking why the company should continue to receive legal immunity after “choosing to editorialize on President Trump’s tweets.”

JioMart also rolled out a WhatsApp business account to select pin codes through which customers could place an order. Interestingly, Reliance has also started signing up small Kirana stores which would allow customers to order online and get groceries delivered from their neighbourhood shop to their doorstep amid the coronavirus crisis.

It must be noted that Facebook Inc had invested Rs 43,574 crore giving the social media giant as much as 9.99% stake in Reliance Jio. The company had said out of the total investment, Rs 14,976 crore will be retained at Jio Platforms to drive future growth, including the JioMart shopping platform on WhatsApp.

Amazon recently announced to build its own coronavirus testing lab and test more employees at its warehouses and other facilities.

  • IANS
  • Last Updated: May 26, 2020, 10:22 AM IST

The Amazon team behind products like Kindle e-readers and Echo smart home speakers are now working on to build Covid-19 testing capabilities. Amazon’s hardware group Lab126 is hiring engineers to work on its coronavirus testing initiative, according to job listings reported by GeekWire.

In a series of job posts, the e-commerce giant is looking for new Lab126 mechanical design engineers to “investigate and introduce new technology and methodology to enhance quality and efficiency of Covid-19 testing,” among other responsibilities.

“Lab126 is based in Silicon Valley, but the posts indicate these jobs are located in Hebron, Ky., where Amazon is separately hiring lab assistants, scientists and others for its COVID-19 testing programme,” said the report. Amazon Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos has made it clear that the company’s Covid-19 response will be a major new initiative.

Amid the call to shut its warehouses and protect front-line employees from the COVID-19 disease, Amazon recently announced to build its own coronavirus testing lab and test more employees at its warehouses and other facilities. According to the company, a team of Amazonians with a variety of skills from research scientists and programme managers to procurement specialists and software engineers have moved from their normal day jobs onto a dedicated team to work on this initiative.

“We have begun assembling the equipment we need to build our first lab and hope to start testing small numbers of our front line employees soon,” Amazon said in a statement. To date, Amazon has made over 150 process changes at sites around the world to ensure the health and safety of its teams.

Covid-19 claimed the life of another Amazon warehouse worker in the US last week, amid demand for enhanced safety measures for the e-commerce giant’s employees. The latest victim became the eighth Amazon warehouse worker in the US to have lost life due to complications from Covid-19, although the e-commerce giant did not disclose the exact numbers.

Oppo Find X2 to Cost Rs 69,990 in India Reveals Amazon India Listing

Oppo Find X2 to Cost Rs 69,990 in India Reveals Amazon India Listing

An Amazon India listing revealed that the handset could launch in India with a price tag of Rs 69,990.

  • News18.com
  • Last Updated: May 23, 2020, 12:37 PM IST

Oppo had announced that it would soon launch its flagship, the Find X2, in India. While the company hasn’t given any details around the launch date or pricing, Amazon India seems to have spoiled the company’s plan by listing the product on its website.

According to a report, an Amazon India listing for the Oppo Find X2 (12GB+256GB model) has been spotted. The listing doesn’t confirm the launch date, however, the source code of the webpage suggests that the handset could be priced at Rs 69,990. The final price of the handset could effectively change. Apart from the price, the listing also mentions some of the specifications of the upcoming phone. Notably the listing has been removed by Amazon India.

The Oppo Find X2 series was unveiled back in March and the company had confirmed earlier this month that it would launch the handset in India soon.

Oppo Find X2 Specifications

The Oppo Find X2 features a 6.7-inch QHD+ Ultra Vision display offering 120Hz refresh rate protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection. The handset runs on a Snapdragon 865 processor paired with 12GB of RAM.

At the back there is a triple rear camera setup featuring a 48-megapixel primary camera, a 12-megapixel camera, and a 13-megapixel camera. At the front there is a 32-megapixel camera to take selfies. The handset comes with a 4,200mAh battery along with support for 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 Flash Charge. Other features include an in-display fingerprint scanner, 5G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth v5.1, GPS, NFC, and USB Type-C port.

Online Shopping Orders Are So High, Amazon India is Looking to Hire 50,000 Workers

The temporary hires will work in Amazon’s fulfilment centers and as part of its delivery network, Amazon said.

  • Last Updated: May 23, 2020, 1:02 PM IST

Amazon.com Inc’s India unit said it would hire 50,000 temporary workers to meet a surge in online shopping in the country, where customers have been stuck indoors for two months in lockdown to fight the coronavirus outbreak. E-commerce firms faced massive disruption in the initial days of the lockdown in India, but a slow easing of the stringent regulations has allowed them to resume large parts of their operations.

“We want to continue helping customers all over India get everything they need so they can continue to practice social distancing,” Amazon senior executive Akhil Saxena said in a statement on the company’s blog. “(The move) will also keep as many people as possible working during this pandemic while providing a safe work environment for them,” said Saxena, Amazon’s VP for customer fulfilment operations in APAC, MENA & Latam.

The temporary hires will work in Amazon’s fulfilment centers and as part of its delivery network, the company said, making the announcement at a time when various other companies in the country have been forced to cut jobs as they try to tide over the health crisis. Amazon itself has pushed its annual global Prime Day event, traditionally a summer affair, to September, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

In India, where the Jeff Bezos-led company faces stiff competition from Walmart Inc’s Flipkart, Amazon earlier said it plans to create 1 million jobs by 2025. The company also said on Thursday it plans to enter the food delivery business in India, pitting itself against well-established startups such as Swiggy and Zomato.
