Vivaldi Browser for Android Update Brings Improved Ad Blocking, Rearranged Tabs and More

Vivaldi Browser’s Android app has received a new update, which the app’s makers claim have improved the browser in two very important aspects – blocking of cookie trackers, and a revamped overall interface. The update follows the Vivaldi browser for PC update that was rolled out last week with similar features as well, and will aim to make the service faster, smoother and more secure. The browser’s layout revamp aims to make the overall usage experience more streamlined, and give users a simple way to access any type of web browsing that they may wish to do.

Through this update, Vivaldi for Android has significantly improved its integrated anti-tracker and ad blocking service. After this update, users will be able to create custom lists that allow specific sites to use cookies on your browser, while blocking out any unnecessary ones. This feature also accommodates for any web page that you may have whitelisted with your account, and the browser can now choose to load ads only for that specific page, while blocking out all other third party advertisements on any page not in the list.

The improved ‘Tab’ functionality allows users to switch between open, private, recently closed, and synced tabs page views by simply tapping on the respective icon on the bottom bar. Vivaldi believes that the redesign offers a better UI design, and will be more in line with its desktop web browser’s design language. This, in turn, might lead to a more uniform user experience for those who prefer the Vivaldi usage experience, over more popular web browsers such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge and more. Alongside this redesign, Vivaldi has also moved features such as Panel Functions, Bookmarks, History, Notes and Downloads to the bottom of the user interface, in the previous version of the browser.

Among other minor features added to this update, Vivaldi for Android 3.2 now gets Dark Mode support for the background theme in Speed Dial, an improved landscape mode to provide more screen space, a user image in Sync Settings, and regular security patches and additional improvements in Notes.

Microsoft has announced that its video meet app will now limit the size of interactive meetings to 1,000 participants, with a seamless shift to a ‘view only mode after the limit is met, for up to 20,000 participants. The company has also introduced new capabilities like allowing people to add the company’s branding to meetings for a professional look and feel.

“Start out with a branded meeting lobby, launching in the coming months, and extend your branding to the core meeting experience coming later,” said Nicole Herskowitz, Microsoft Teams General Manager. A new Cloud-based phone calling system in Team will help employees who use phone numbers to make and receive calls with customers, partners, and vendors, whether they are in the office or working from home. “Connecting 1:1 with colleagues, customers and partners is important, especially when meeting face-to-face can be challenging. Employees in your organization can easily call each other from Teams without a phone number,” Herskowitz said in a statement on Monday. The new ‘Teams Displays’ feature will offer “a fresh perspective on what a phone could be.”

This is a dedicated Teams device featuring an ambient touch screen, high-quality calling and video, and a hands-free experience powered by Cortana. With Cortana built-in, the Lenovo ThinkSmart View and Yealink will deliver the first Microsoft Teams displays in the US later this year. “We are announcing extended support for Skype for Business (3PIP) phones beyond 2023, so you can continue to use your existing Skype for Business phones as you move to Teams,” said the company. Additionally, it will be supporting core calling features on SIP phones from Cisco, Yealink, Polycom, and others with Teams.

Support for SIP phones will be available in the first half of 2021. A new lineup of Microsoft Teams phones with physical buttons, high-quality audio, and core calling features are also coming at affordable prices. “These phones are designed for common areas and basic information worker scenarios, with options available from AudioCodes, Poly, Yealink starting early 2021,” said Microsoft. “We are also expanding our portfolio to deliver new USB peripherals that have dial pads and a modern Teams user interface for heavy call users,” it added.

Microsoft Teams Update Brings it Closer to the Consumer Market: Here’s What’s New

In a major update, Microsoft has announced some new features for its communication and collaboration platform Teams. Ever since the Covid-19 pandemic, the company has been working on adding new features to bring a more personalised experience, and with the new update, it continues to dig deep into the consumer market.

“These features offer three key benefits for people at work and in education. First, they help you feel more connected with your team and reduce meeting fatigue. Second, they make meetings more inclusive and engaging. And third, they help streamline your work and save time. It’s all about enabling people everywhere to collaborate, to stay connected, and to discover new ways to be productive from anywhere,” said Jared Spataro, Corporate Vice President for Microsoft 365.

The first major feature that is coming to Teams is ‘Together Mode’ which is like a new way to do virtual meetings. Microsoft is using AI to map a user’s face and shoulders to create a virtual live avatar. This tiny real-life version of the user is then placed in a virtual meeting room alongside other co-workers. According to the company, this will help you better engage with meetings by removing distractions around you. The feature should work well for meetings with multiple participants for brainstorming or roundtable discussions, as you can see who is actually speaking and who isn’t. Together mode with auditorium view is currently rolling out and will be generally available in August.

The second big update coming to Teams is dynamic view. This is specifically designed to give users more control over how they see content and other participants in a meeting. This includes the ability to show shared content and specific participants side-by-side. This should really help users while presenting to a group of co-workers. The new large gallery view that was announced earlier, is also going to roll out soon where users can see a video of up to 49 people in a meeting simultaneously, and split meeting participants into smaller groups for ease of communication.

With the increase in virtual meetings, it has become important to have video filters and Microsoft has thought of that as well. It is bringing video filters as well as live reactions to Teams. The filters can be used to soften your background or improve the lighting on your face so participants can see you better. With live reactions, participants can react with an emoji during meetings that will be visible to all. Later this year Teams will also include PowerPoint Live Presentations to and new chat bubbles wherein chats sent during a meeting will surface on the screens of all meeting participants.

Microsoft Teams will soon support up to 1,000 participants to bring large groups together for meetings or classes. This could also extend to up to 20,000 for a view-only meeting, say a presentation or a discussion. Live transcripts will also be added to Teams later this year along with the ability to translate live captions into subtitles making it easier for participants to catch up when a meeting is being held in another language.

Lastly, Cortana is soon going to be a part of Teams mobile app. This will allow users to ask Cortana to make a call, join a meeting, send chat messages, share files, and so on.

Microsoft also announced the new Microsoft Teams display, sort of like a smart display that we’ve seen with Google Assistant, only this one is going to be powered by Cortana. The all-in-one dedicated Teams devices will feature an ambient touchscreen and a hands-free experience allowing you to use your voice for various commands. Lenovo and Yealink will be delivering the first such devices later this year.

Read This if You Plan to Buy a Budget Android Phone: Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 Brings 5G & More

Affordable and mid-range Android smartphones could see the biggest performance jump in years, with Qualcomm unveiling the new Snapdragon 690 processor. This is the first time 5G is coming to the 6-series chipsets, along with significant performance as well as battery life improvements which will significantly improve the experience on the lower priced Android smartphones. Qualcomm confirms that HMD Global, LG Electronics, Motorola, Sharp, TCL, and Wingtech are the smartphone makers and OEMs who will soon announce new phones on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 5G Mobile Platform.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 5G Mobile Platform is built on the 8-nanometer process and is paired with the X51 modem. This succeeds the Snapdragon 675 processor. Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 690 5G Mobile Platform will support SA, NSA and global 5G bands sub-6GHz. As of now, the nnWave support remains on the higher spec 7-series and 8-series Snapdragon chipsets. In terms of performance, the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 5G Mobile Platform will be up to 20% faster in terms of performance and up to 60% faster when it comes to graphics, compared with the Snapdragon 675 that it succeeds.

“Driving the expansion of 5G into the Snapdragon 6-series has the potential to make 5G accessible to more than 2 billion smartphone users around the world,” says Cristiano Amon, president, Qualcomm Incorporated. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 5G Mobile Platform will run two cores at 2.0GHz and six cores at 1.7GHz. The Adreno 619L takes care of the graphics and there is the Snapdragon X51 modem for 5G connectivity.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 5G Mobile Platform also will enable 4K video recording at 30fps and support up to 192-megapixel photography, from up to 48-megapixel sensors. That means cameras in the lower price bands of the Android smartphone space will now see a significant boost as well. There is also the fifth-generation AI Engine called Arcsoft which uses the Hexagon Tensor Accelerator (HTA) that significantly improves the usage of filters in real-time, such as with Snapchat. The AI will also work in the background to ensure transitions between ultrawide, wide and telephoto cameras are smooth, and you don’t notice a judder in the transition.

Displays in these phones could also now support higher refresh rates, because the Snapdragon 690 will support up to 120Hz refresh rates at the FHD+ resolution. This also supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4+ charging standard.

“Just like the Android experience on our Nokia smartphones, our take on 5G is also future proofed. Earlier this year, we were the first manufacturer to leverage the power of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G 5G Modular Platform in a smartphone, delivering on our vision of a truly future-proof global 5G experience with the Nokia 8.3 5G,” says Juho Sarvikas, chief product officer, HMD Global. The Nokia phones will push the PureDisplay and ZEISS Imaging technologies to more affordable phones.

“We’re committed to expand 5G into our portfolio and we will rely on the new Snapdragon 690 Mobile Platform to continue to do it,” says Sergio Buniac, president, Motorola Mobility.

You just have to wait a bit longer. Smartphones and mobile devices running the Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 platform are already in development and are expected to be commercially available in the second half of this year.

Along with that, it has 18W fast-charging support through USB-C. The power bank is priced at CNY 169 (~Rs 1,800), and comes in Black and White colour options.

The Mi Power Bank 3 will first go on sale in China through the company’s own website and JD.com, from June 18. However, there is no word on when the Mi Power Bank 3 Quick Charge Edition will be launched globally, and in turn, be launched in India as well.

Twitter Fleets Brings Instagram-Like Disappearing Posts That You Can't Retweet

Twitter has announced the rollout of a new feature, Twitter Fleets, for its mobile users in India. The feature finally brings Twitter at par with the likes of Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and WhatsApp, wherein users will get to post temporary updates on their Twitter profiles, which will last only for 24 hours. As seen with such disappearing format posts on other platforms, Twitter Fleets will also only be available for the set time period, beyond which the posts will disappear from the platform. Users will be able to see the posts, but not get to like, retweet or post public responses to them. Any replies made to Fleets on Twitter will directly appear as replies in Twitter’s direct messages tab, which suggests that Twitter’s DMs may just become a more active place in the near future.

The feature is initially being rolled out only to Twitter’s Android and iOS apps. Moreover, it is a test rollout, so it is likely that some of us may face some delay in getting Fleets. The only sure way of checking this is by keeping an eye out for an update to the Twitter app on either of the two mobile platforms. Once the update is rolled out, users eligible for testing of Fleets will see an interface similar to the image attached above. However, Twitter has confirmed that all of its India users are going to get access to Fleets, which is encouraging. India is the third market where Twitter is rolling out Fleets, after Brazil and Italy.

In a press statement, a Twitter spokesperson said about Fleets, “We learned from research that people don’t Tweet because Tweets are public, feel permanent, and display the number of Retweets and Likes. We hope Fleets will empower many more people to express themselves more freely.” Much like Instagram or Snapchat, users can simply tap on their profile photos to access Fleets, and thereby the posting process should follow a similar interface as we are used to with Instagram Stories and other similar platforms.

“From the test in India, we’ll learn how adding a new mode of conversation changes the way Indians engage on Twitter. It’ll also be interesting to see if it further amplifies the diversity of usage by allowing people to share what they’re thinking in a way that is light-touch and light-hearted,” said Manish Maheshwari, managing director of Twitter India, about the launch of Fleets in the country.

With Twitter largely focusing on public posting so far, the addition of disappearing posts on the platform, that too in a format that most people are largely used to, can be seen as a move to drive more engagement on the platform. It will be interesting to see how people take to the feature going forward, and what Twitter’s strategy would be in terms of rolling out the feature at a larger scale around the world.
