India Bans 59 Popular Chinese Apps: Status Check On TikTok, Likee, Helo, WeChat, CamScanner & More

Late yesterday, India banned as many as 59 popular smartphone apps for Android smartphones as well as the Apple iPhone. The notification issued by The Ministry of Information Technology of the Government of India derived powers under the section 69A of the Information Technology Act read with the relevant provisions of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009 citing the concerns about the security, integrity and defense of India. The apps that now stand banned in India, across the Google Android ecosystem and the Apple iPhone as well as the iPad platforms now include TikTok, Shareit, WeChat, Helo, Likee, UC News, Bigo Live, UC Browser, ES File Explorer and Mi Community. As we do a status check this morning on some of the popular apps in this list, we notice that some are available on the Google Play Store for Android phones and the App Store for the Apple iPhone, yet some app listings have been removed.

A quick search for the incredibly popular TikTok on the Google Play Store for Android and the Apple App Store for the iPhone doesn’t reveal favorable results for fans and users. The app, developed by Chinese tech company ByteDance, has been taken down, for the time being on the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. Incidentally, another social media app Helo is also presently unavailable on the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.

TikTok has been taken down, for the time being on the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store

It is expected that while app listings for all 59 apps on the list issued by the Government of India will be taken down from the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store at some point. For the millions of users who may also have these installed on their Android phones and iPhones, there will be checks at the Internet service provider (ISP) and mobile service provider stage to ensure that traffic to and from these apps is blocked on the network, thereby rendering them in-operational. It is expected that all mobile service providers will block these apps on the 3G/4G networks while all broadband companies will enable these filters on wired and wireless broadband options.

The purge on the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store may take some time though. As of the time of writing this, apps including Likee, Vigo Video, WeChat, CamScanner and UC Browser are still available for download on both Android and iOS platforms.

This announcement on the ban on 59 popular smartphone apps, owned by Chinese tech companies, comes at a time when tensions between India and China are at an all-time high, after the military skirmishes earlier this month. There have been suspicions that the apps developed and or owned by Chinese companies and developers collect user data from their phones without their permissions and transmit it back to the owners.

or the millions of users who may also have these installed on their Android phones and iPhones, there will be checks at the Internet service provider (ISP) and mobile service provider stage to ensure that traffic to and from these apps is blocked on the network

“The Ministry of Information Technology has received many complaints from various sources including several reports about misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorized manner to servers which have locations outside India. The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures,” says the Ministry of Electronics and IT in an official statement.

This move could also have a cascading effect, as more countries could end up banning these apps in the coming days. There has been a global conversation over the past few months about the possible backdoors in Chinese company Huawei’s 5G mobile network infrastructure allowing the company or even the Chinese government to snoop in on user data. Many countries have either banned Huawei’s 5G network hardware altogether or are reluctant to use it.

This ban on popular Chinese-owned apps, including social networks such as TikTok, could have a longer-term impact on the company valuations as well, after a large chunk of their user base has been effectively shut out. At this time, it is not clear how long the ban will be in place but there are multiple recommendations in place on how to block these potentially malicious apps from being used on internet networks within India.

Users will be able to check the live status of blood availability at the national headquarters of the Indian Red Cross Society blood bank in New Delhi.

  • Last Updated: June 25, 2020, 6:08 PM IST

A mobile application that would enable people to access “safe blood” easily, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, was launched by Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Thursday. Developed by the E-Raktkosh team of Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) under the Digital India scheme, the application will bring transparency and facilitate single-window access to blood services of the Indian Red Cross Society, officials said.

Vardhan said, “In the last few months, I received several complaints from people facing difficulties in accessing safe blood. Many people require blood-related services regularly because of certain medical conditions in their families. Through this app, four units of blood can be requisitioned at a time and the blood bank will wait for 12 hours for the person to collect it.” “At a time when the country is going through a pandemic, the mobile app will provide succour to all those who are in dire need of blood,” the health minister said.

Users with this app can know the live status of blood availability at the national headquarters of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) blood bank in Delhi. Once a request is placed through the app, the requisite units become visible to national headquarters blood bank in its e-Raktkosh dashboard and this allows assured delivery within the specified time, the health ministry said in a statement. The stock status of other Red Cross Blood Banks in the country is also visible in the app. It would also facilitate voluntary blood donation through its camp search feature that allows users to know the venue and time of scheduled camps nearby, officials said.

Urging people to donate blood, Vardhan said that any person below the age of 65 can give blood as many as four times a year. “Regular blood donation can prevent obesity, cardiac problems and many other ailments. Not just that, blood donation is also a spiritual path by which mankind can be served,” he said. After the launch, Vardhan also presided over the managing body meeting of the Indian Red Cross Society.

There, he said the IRCS has been playing a major role during COVID-19 pandemic alongside the government, especially in maintaining an adequate supply of safe blood by issuing passes to donors and organizing donation camps, according to a health ministry statement. All 89 IRCS blood banks and 1,100 branches across the country have collected more than 1,00,000 units of blood through in-house donations and from around 2,000 donation camps organized during the lockdown.

Also, more than 38,000 blood donors registered with NHQ Blood Bank have been contacted and motivated to donate blood. The NHQ Blood Bank conducted 55 blood donation camps collecting 2,896 units of blood. The IRCS has served more than 3,00,00,000 cooked meals and provided ration to more than 11,00,000 families.

Oppo Reveals Phones That Offer Wi-Fi Calling in India: Check if Yours Made The Cut

Oppo's new roadmap for VoWiFi calling feature. (Pic Source: ColorOS/Twitter)

Oppo’s new roadmap for VoWiFi calling feature. (Pic Source: ColorOS/Twitter)

VoWiFi or Wi-Fi calling lets users make and receive calls over a Wi-Fi connection without using cellular services.

  • News18.com
  • Last Updated: June 17, 2020, 11:49 AM IST

Oppo has published a list of smartphones that support Wi-Fi calling in India. With internet calling becoming ever so popular in the country, smartphones supporting VoWiFi are soon going to be necessary sustenance, and the Oppo list will help its users figure out whether their devices have the feature already, or might get it soon. This list has stated devices that are already running on a beta version of Oppo’s custom interface, the ColorOS 7-based Android 10, or will be getting it in the days to come, as the ones that already have Wi-Fi Calling support.

Oppo phones that already have VoWiFi calling, or are scheduled to get the update very soon, include Oppo A9, Oppo A9 (2020), Oppo Reno, Oppo Reno 2, Oppo Reno 2F, Oppo Reno 10x Zoom, Oppo A5 (2020), Oppo F9 series, Oppo F7 series, Oppo F11 series, and Oppo R17 Pro. Interestingly, the company has already rolled out the VoWiFi calling feature to the Oppo K3, a mid-premium segment smartphone, through the ColorOS 7 update in May. Reports have stated that the ColorOS 7 rollout is being phased gradually, with a small number of devices receiving the update at one time. The volume of the update is expected to be expanded, if no critical bugs are found in the system.

VoWiFi, generally known as Wi-Fi-based VoIP service or Wi-Fi calling, enables users to make and receive both audio and video calls over a Wi-Fi connection without using cellular services, or when the latter is weak or unsteady. Alongside OEMs, Wi-Fi Calling is also dependent on operators who support it. In India, this feature is currently available for users with Airtel or Reliance Jio connections.

To check if your phone has made the cut for the VoWiFi feature, head to Settings, and go to ‘Dual Sim & Mobile Network’. Here, see if the feature is available. If it is available on your device, then you can tap Wi-Fi calling and choose the ‘Wi-Fi Calling Preferred’ option.
