Swiggy, Zomato to Begin Home Delivery of Liquor in Jharkhand: Here Are All The Details

Representative image. (Reuters)

Representative image. (Reuters)

Swiggy has confirmed that it will be following a protocol to verify age, authenticate the delivery as well as limited the amount of liquor one can order.

  • Last Updated: May 21, 2020, 2:45 PM IST

Online food delivery platforms Swiggy and Zomato have reportedly been given the green light to commence home delivery of liquor to consumers in the state of Jharkhand. The Jharkhand state government gave the go-ahead to the two companies with the service currently rolling out for consumers in Ranchi. The service is expected to soon reach other cities of Jharkhand in the coming week. The development comes amidst the ongoing coronavirus lockdown across the nation

According to a press statement by Swiggy, the app will now have a new ‘Wine Shops’ section in the app. The service has begun in Ranchi with other cities to be added within the week. With the introduction of the new service, Swiggy will be introducing mandatory age verification and user authentication to complete the delivery. There will also be a cap on the amount of liquor one can order based on the state laws. Swiggy has also confirmed that it is in the final stages of discussions with various other state governments which means that the service could soon expand to other major cities across the country. Zomato is yet to release a press statement on the development.

“We have adopted hybrid system for making liquor available in some of the big cities like Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghr, Dhanbad, Ramgarh, Giridih and Palamu by opening the retail liquor shops where people can go and purchase liquor taking care of the social distancing. Secondly, people can get home delivery of liquor at their doorsteps through the two food aggregators – Zomato and Swiggy by downloading the app on their mobile phones,” said Excise and Prohibition Secretary Vinay Kumar Chaoubey.

With the relaxation of nationwide lockdown in the past couple of weeks, social distancing continues to be a huge challenge. The central government had allowed the sale of liquor across the country, and while states have limited the number of shops allowed to operate, long queues of customers were witnessed in all major cities around the country.

Earlier this month, there was a report that Zomato is in the process of getting permission to deliver liquor to customers right at their doorsteps. Zomato and Swiggy have already diversified into grocery deliveries as the restrictions on movement shuttered some restaurants and people hesitated to order outside food due to fears of catching the disease.

This is a big change for the liquor industry as this is the first time alcohol home delivery is being officially allowed in any part of India. This could also lead to a change in the laws pertaining to liquor consumption across the country and probably a centralized delivery system. International Spirits and Wines Association of India executive chairman Amrit Kiran Singh had earlier said that states should allow alcohol deliveries to help boost state revenues hit by the lockdown. “The challenge is to ensure revenue from alcohol continues to be available.”

Apple Details Safety Plan For Store Reopening: Local Data Monitoring, Daily Deep Cleaning & More

Image: Apple

Apple says they will look at every available piece of data — including local cases, near and long‑term trends, and guidance from national and local health officials.

  • Last Updated: May 18, 2020, 9:17 AM IST

Apple has detailed its plans to safely reopen its retail stores worldwide, depending on the COVID-19 situation region by region. The company says it will carefully analyze data including local cases, near and long‑term trends, and guidance from national and local health officials, before taking a decision to reopen stores. This comes at a time when certain countries are easing lockdown restrictions depending on the curve of COVID cases in that area. Apple insists they will be cautious and not rush into a decision. The company now has more than 100 stores open worldwide.

“As of today, nearly 100 of our stores globally have been able to open their doors to our customers again,” says Deidre O’Brien, senior vice-president of Retail at Apple, in a letter posted on the company’s website. “We look at every available piece of data — including local cases, near and long‑term trends, and guidance from national and local health officials. These are not decisions we rush into — and a store opening in no way means that we won’t take the preventative step of closing it again should local conditions warrant,” she adds.

Consumers can find a store near them by using the Find a Store tool on the Apple website.

Apple says that for reopened stores, focus will be on limiting occupancy at any given point of time. “Giving everybody lots of room,” as they say. There will also be renewed focus on one‑on‑one, personalized service at the Genius Bar and throughout the store.

“Face coverings will be required for all of our teams and customers, and we will provide them to customers who don’t bring their own. Temperature checks will be conducted at the door and posted health questions will screen for those with symptoms — like cough or fever — or who have had recent exposure to someone infected with COVID‑19,” says O’Brien. Every Apple store will also focus on enhanced deep cleanings that place special emphasis on all surfaces, display products, and highly trafficked areas, throughout every day.

Apple also says that in countries and regions where they have an online store, anyone ordering online will have the option of getting their order delivered home or can pick it up from one of the nearby assigned stores.

Apple has also played an active role in supporting the health workers as well as medical infrastructure dealing with COVID cases in the US and around the world. This includes the more than 30 million masks and 10 million custom‑built face shields for doctors and nurses and the partnership with manufacturers in the United States to deploy more than a million testing kits per week. Apple and Google are also working towards releasing a health tracking and contact tracing software for iPhones and Android phones, which will put user privacy as a primary requirement.

Samsung Finance+ Digital Lending Service Now Available at Your Doorstep: All The Details Here

The home delivery of Samsung Finance+ will enable consumers to buy their Galaxy smartphones at easy finance from the comfort of their homes, Samsung said.

Samsung has announced the roll-out of its digital lending platform Finance+ to customers’ doorsteps, making it simpler for them to purchase the company’s Galaxy smartphones by availing an easy financing opportunity. Customers had to previously walk-in at select Samsung stores to avail the Samsung Finance+ service. However, in times of social distancing norms due to COVID-19-induced lockdown, the company is facilitating home-delivery of the service to its customers.

“At Samsung, consumers are at the heart of everything we do. The home delivery of Samsung Finance+ will enable our consumers to buy their favourite Galaxy smartphone at easy finance from the comfort of their homes,” said Mohandeep Singh, Senior Vice President, Mobile Business, Samsung India. “It will also ensure that our consumers don’t have to step out to a physical store at a time when Social Distancing is the new normal. Samsung Finance+ is our ‘Make for India’ initiative towards financial inclusion and Digital India. We are confident that the home delivery of Samsung Finance+ will help millions of consumers in India,” he added.

Samsung has partnered with DMI Finance for its Samsung Finance+ service in India. Presently, the “Finance+” service is available across 12,000 dealers in nearly 300 towns in India. The entire journey is fully digital, fast and convenient. Given the importance of social distancing in the current circumstances, Samsung’s new initiative will ensure the customer gets finance for Galaxy smartphone without the need of visiting a store,” Samsung said in a statement.

“These testing times have only strengthened DMI’s resolve to provide hassle-free credit to the widest population possible. We are proud to partner Samsung in extending the successful Finance+ program to home service,” said Shivashish Chatterjee, co-founder, DMI.

You Can Finally Pre-Order The OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro in India: Here Are The Details

The OnePlus 8 series was launched earlier this month and while we are still waiting for the company to announce the date of availability, Amazon India has begun taking pre-orders. According to the e-commerce website, you can now pre-order the OnePlus 8 or the OnePlus 8 Pro by purchasing an Amazon Pay eGift Card.

All you need to do is buy a Rs 1000 gift card before May 10. A coupon will be sent to your registered email address and you can use it to buy the phone from May 11 to June 30. Customers will also get Rs 1000 back in their Amazon Pay account within 30 days of purchase of the phone.

ONEPLUS 8

The new OnePlus 8 comes with the new and more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor. OnePlus is offering a high-end 12GB RAM this time apart from the 8GB RAM version. Notably, this will be the LPDDR4X memory unlike the LPDDR5 RAM being offered on the Pro variant, which doesn’t necessarily make it slow by any means. Storage options include 128GB and 256GB UFS 3.0 dual-lane.

The display seems to be similar to the OnePlus 7T, but is now curved at the edges. It is a 6.55-inch Fluid AMOLED panel with 90Hz refresh rate and a FullHD+ resolution of 2400×1080 pixels. It also supports HDR10+ and is said to be ‘meticulously tuned’ color accuracy rating of JNCD around 0.4. (JNCD means “Just Noticeable Color Difference” which is an indicator for measuring color accuracy used by companies including DisplayMate). Considering the 7T offered peak display brightness of 1000nits, so we are expecting similar performance from this display.

Probably the most important upgrade is the battery. While the OnePlus 7T had a 3,800mAh battery, the OnePlus 8 offers a 4,300mAh battery. According to the company, the large battery provides 13% more battery capacity compared to the 7T. Of course, there is Warp Charge 30T which is claimed to charge from 1% to 50% in 22 minutes. There is sadly no wireless charging like the OnePlus 8 Pro.

The camera department hasn’t seen a big update. There is a triple camera setup at the back highlighted by the same 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 sensor as last year. Rest of the cameras are however different, including a 16-megapixel sensor with an ultrawide lens, and a 2-megapixel macro camera. This means that there is no telephoto camera on the new OnePlus 8. The front camera is a 16-megapixel sensor with a fixed focus.

Other important features including an in-display fingerprint scanner, face unlock, stereo speakers, Dolby Atmos support, USB-C 3.1, NFC and so on. The handset will be offered in three colours- Onyx Black, Interstellar, Glow, and Glacial Green.

As for pricing, the 6GB RAM and 128GB base variant is priced at Rs 41,999, the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage variant is priced at Rs 44,999 while the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage version comes at Rs 49,999.

ONEPLUS 8 PRO

This one also comes with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor. There is also up to 12GB of RAM, up to 256GB of storage, a quad camera setup taking care of the photography duties, as well as a large 4510mAh battery. You will be able to buy the OnePlus 8 Pro in Onyx Black, Glacial Green and Ultramarine Blue colourways.

This is the first OnePlus phone which offers wireless charging. And it isn’t just for the sake of ticking off the spec sheet—OnePlus calls this the Warp Charge 30 Wireless, which charges a fully discharged OnePlus 8 Pro’s battery to 50% charge in 30 minutes. And of course, if you are using the 30-watt wall charger, the 0-50% charge happens in 23 minutes. For a massive 4,510mAh battery, that is actually a great stat to show off. It also has the Reverse Wireless Charging feature, which lets you also charge other wireless charging capable products (such as phones and earbuds) by simply placing them flat on the back of the OnePlus 8 Pro.

Apart from the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor, OnePlus is also using the LPDDR5 RAM modules, which are 30% faster than before and also consume up to 20% lesser power—all this means even faster performance with lesser battery usage.

The 6.78-inch Fluid AMOLED display has the 3168 x 1440-pixel resolution and the 19.8:9 aspect ratio. This also gets the 120Hz refresh rate, which means the display refreshes 120 times per second. There is also a punch hole on the top left corner, which means the pop-up selfie camera is no more.

OnePlus has also tweaked the animations in the Oxygen OS to take better advantage of these fine new capabilities. In fact, the OnePlus 8 Pro also gets the MEMC chip, often found in large screen TVs, which alter the frame rates in videos to upgrade, let’s say a 30fps video to a 120fps video, so that it looks better on this more fluid display. This display is HDR10+ compatible.

OnePlus claims that the OnePlus 8 Pro’s 10-bit colour display produces more than a billion unique colours, which they say is 60X more than standard smartphone displays. This is also expected to be a very bright display, touching as much as 1,300nits of brightness outdoors.

A lot of work has definitely gone into potentially improving photography performance. There is a 48-megapixel main camera, there is a 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera, an 8-megapixel telephoto camera and a 5-megapixel colour filter camera. There is 3x hybrid zoom and the main Sony IMX689 sensor, as well as the telephoto camera, have optical image stabilization as well. What is new is the colour filter camera, which should allow you to add more lighting effects and colour filters to your photos—though how that works, we will only really know when we get to use the OnePlus 8 Pro. The Single Frame 3-HDR technology will surely be very relevant for high contrast photos that have a backlighting scenario.

This also supports the Wi-Fi 6 standard which offers maximum speeds of 9.8Gbps, and that is up to 2.7 times faster than the current Wi-Fi 5 standard. As for pricing, the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage variant has been priced at Rs 54,999 and the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage variant has been priced at Rs 59,999.

The Samsung blood pressure monitoring app will be released in Q3 2020.

  • News18.com
  • Last Updated: April 21, 2020, 8:18 PM IST

After sporting multiple health oriented features for its latest smartwatch, the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2, the company has introduced a new feature to its suite of health tracking capabilities, with blood pressure monitoring. Available via Samsung Health Monitor, the app will be available later this year, and according to Samsung, will “progressively expand to upcoming Galaxy Watch devices”.

“The Samsung Health Monitor app has the potential to help millions of people around the world who are affected by high blood pressure,” says Taejong Jay Yang, Corporate SVP and Head of Health Team, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. The Samsung Health Monitor has also received clearance from South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) as a Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) to measure blood pressure.

It will also become a cuffless, government-cleared, and over-the-counter blood pressure monitoring app, signifying a major improvement in terms of the healthcare features that a smartwatch and a fitness tracker can be capable of. Impressively, Samsung managed to implement these techniques without any hardware-end improvement. However, there are a few important aspects to note before the feature is used.

To be used, the app first has to be calibrated with a traditional blood pressure cuff, following which it will monitoring blood pressure through pulse wave analysis. Users need to re-calibrate the app at least once every four weeks to keep the feature running, which can be done from any local medical or pathological centre. “With the addition of blood pressure monitoring, the Galaxy Watch Active2 boasts Samsung’s most advanced health and wellness capabilities yet,” Samsung’s statement further added.

According to the company, users can avail the benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) and Deep Neural Networks-enhanced, real-time translation in all these languages while using Bing and the Microsoft Translator website, as well as the Microsoft Translator App for Android, IOS and Windows. The app can recognise and translate languages from text, speech and even photos. Microsoft is also rolling out support for these languages in the Microsoft Office 365 and the Swiftkey keyboard.

For organisations of all sizes, Microsoft provides an application programming interface (APIs) on Azure that they can use in their products to conduct their business across the country and globally in different languages. Businesses can easily integrate the Microsoft Translator text translation API into their applications websites, tools, or any solution requiring multi-language support, including e-content translation, e-commerce product catalogues, product documentation and internal communication among others, the company said.
