As the global smartphone market plummeted 14 per cent in the June quarter, Apple was the only vendor to grow as it shipped 45.1 million iPhones globally, a growth of 25 per cent compared to the previous year, according to a new report. Samsung fell 30 per cent, Huawei 5 per cent, Xiaomi 10 per cent, OPPO 16 per cent and others 23 per cent in terms of shipments in the second quarter, reported market research firm Canalys.

“Apple defied expectations in Q2. Its new iPhone SE was critical in the quarter, accounting for around 28 per cent of its global volume, while iPhone 11 remained a strong best-seller at nearly 40 per cent,” analyst Vincent Thielke on Friday. According to him, iPhone SE will remain crucial to prop up the volume this year, amid delays to Apple’s next flagship release. “In China, it had blockbuster results, growing 35 per cent to reach 7.7 million units. It is unusual for Apple’s Q2 shipments to increase sequentially,” said Thielke. The smartphone market worldwide fell to 285 million units, a second consecutive quarter of freefall, as lockdown orders caused by the Covid-19 pandemic persisted through April and May.

Huawei toppled Samsung with shipping 55.8 million units, compared to Samsung’s 53.7 million in Q2 2020. Apple was third with 45.1 million units. Xiaomi came fourth, shipping 28.8 million units, which was down 10 per cent, and OPPO reclaimed fifth place from Vivo, shipping 25.8 million units with a 16 per cent decline. “As well as the new iPhone SE, Apple is also demonstrating skills in new user acquisition. It adapted quickly to the pandemic, doubling down on the digital customer experience as stay-at-home measures drive more customers to online channels,” said the report.

Apple iPhone 12 Series Design Leaks Through Dummy Units: Here is How The Phones Could Look

The dummies reveal three smartphones in the iPhone 12 series out of four, namely, the 5.4-inch iPhone 12, 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro, and the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max.

There have been a number of leaks over the past few weeks around Apple’s upcoming iPhone 12 series smartphones that the company plans to unveil in September this year. Now, a new leak in the form of a short video has dropped a hint on Apple’s newest offering and how the devices might actually look and feel upon the launch.

The latest leak comes through Mobile Fun which showcases dummy units of three iPhone models from the series, namely, the 5.4-inch iPhone 12, 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro, and the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max. In case, you are wondering why the iPhone 12 Max is missing from the scenes, well, the video also reveals that they haven’t gotten their hands on that device but says that it could share “many physical attributes” to the iPhone 12 Pro.

The report reveals some interesting things through the dummies, including the cameras of the devices, including that of the iPhone 12 Max, which was missing from the scene. As far as the camera is concerned, both the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max will reportedly sport a dual-camera setup compared to a triple-camera setup in the higher-end iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max respectively.

The video also claims that the footprint of the iPhone 12 will fall in the middle of the smaller 2016 iPhone SE, and the more recent iPhone SE 2020 released this year. This somehow clears the air that the iPhone 12 will reportedly have a smaller screen size than the 6.1-inch iPhone 11. Furthermore, the report adds that the iPhone 12 will have many similarities when compared to the iPhone SE 2016. One of them, as the video reveals, are the flat edges compared to the curved edges as seen on iPhone 11 models. Similarly, the 6.1-inch iPhone 11 models look slightly larger when placed alongside the iPhone 12 Pro which has the dimensions. The report says it’s probably because of the curved edges of the iPhone 11 models that make it look bigger in size.

Coming to the camera optics, the dummies drop a hint that both the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will pack a wide camera sensor, an ultra-wide camera sensor, and a telephoto sensor along with a fourth LiDAR Scanner. Although rumours and leaks in the past suggested that Apple would switch to USB-C ports this year, the dummies port dimensions suggest that the company will continue to use the Lightning port.

The 64GB variant of the Google Pixel 4a could be priced at just $299, while the 128GB variant of the Pixel 4a may have a price tag of $349.

Google is all set to launch its mid-range smartphone Pixel 4a some time in the month of June. In fact, the smartphone has been spotted in numerous leaks already, and rumours about its features and specifications also abound. However, if the latest reports are to be believed, then the Google Pixel 4a could be affordable than the iPhone SE 2020 that Apple launched in April.

According to 9to5Google’s Stephen Hall, the 64GB variant of the Google Pixel 4a could be priced at just $299 (~Rs 22,600), while the 128GB variant of the Pixel 4a will have a price tag of $349 (~Rs 26,400). In comparison, the 64GB variant of iPhone SE 2020 costs $399 (Rs 42,500 in India), while the 128GB and 256GB variants are priced at $449 (Rs 47,800) and $549 (Rs 58,300) respectively. Not accounting for the forex rates and import duties, a direct comparison between the Google Pixel 4a and the iPhone SE 2020 suggests that the pricing difference may well peg the two devices in different market segments, and in turn, significantly influence buyer decision.

The Google Pixel 4a also appears to have gone through some benchmark tests as well. The device is said to feature a 5.8-inch full HD+ OLED display, a 12.2-megapixel rear and 8-megapixel front-facing camera. It is also rumoured to be powered by the Snapdragon 730 chipset, and a 3000mAh battery. The camera quality is expected to be up to the mark with other Pixel devices and Google’s computational photography prowess, and a physical fingerprint reader might be in order.

The Google Pixel 4a could be launched on June 3, when Google is also expected to live stream the ‘Android 11 Beta Launch Show’. The scheme of things have significantly altered as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the once-fixed event of Google I/O, which would be used as an Android preview, developer festival and hardware showcase pad, is now going to be hosted online.

Apple iPhone SE 2020 Appears on Flipkart, to Sell in India Soon

Apple is having a strong run in India, with the iPhone 11 leading Apple to the top of the premium segment of smartphones in the country, according to analysts. To keep this run intact, Apple’s iPhone SE 2020 may be a key device. Now, according to a poster spotted on Flipkart, the iPhone SE 2020 will be launched in the country soon. The iPhone SE 2020 was featured on Flipkart’s home page with ‘coming soon’ and ‘notify me’ tags, suggesting that the device will be available for sale very soon.

The iPhone SE 2020 has been announced for the Indian market at a fairly competitive price, with the 64GB variant of the phone priced at Rs 42,500. The 128GB variant of the new iPhone SE is priced at Rs 47,800, while the 256GB variant costs Rs 58,300. Interested users can get the device in black, white and the special, Product Red edition. The pricing makes it the most affordable new iPhone that can be bought in India, and with its new price point, squarely challenges a market that may have otherwise be dominated by the OnePlus 8 series, Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10 Lite devices, and also the likes of the newly announced Mi 10 by Xiaomi.

A report by 91mobiles further states that the iPhone SE 2020 has been listed on Flipkart as a ‘Flipkart Unique’ product, which suggests that it may not be available on Amazon or any other platform. Should this eventually turn out to be true, then this would also be the first time that Apple would be tying its devices exclusively to a single e-commerce platform — a move that is generally not usual for the brand. However, given the way the Covid-19 pandemic has altered the world, weakened the economy and possibly changed spending patterns, it would not be impossible for brands to try new tactics in order to move stocks faster.

The iPhone SE 2020 is powered by the A13 Bionic processor also found inside the iPhone 11. It features a single camera unit, but has a host of software optimisations to bring new camera features to the device. While it is the only ‘SE’ device on sale right now, rumours suggest that the company may also introduce an iPhone SE ‘Plus’ some time later this year.

The Next Apple AirPods Refresh Will Not Arrive before 2021

Apple was all set to launch the new AirPods this year but has delayed its release owing to COVID-19 pandemic.

  • News18.com
  • Last Updated: May 9, 2020, 2:54 PM IST

The Coronavirus pandemic has hit the smartphone industry like never before, forcing big players to revamp their plans as well as delaying the launch of several flagship products. Apple however has weathered the storm relatively well and has managed to launch a variety of new products including the iPhone SE 2020, the new iPad Pro as well as new updates to the Mac range including the 13-inch MacBook Pro. Hence, it can be assumed that Apple has stayed well on its course to make 2020 quite an eventful year despite the coronavirus crisis.

Having said that, if a report by the Nikkei Asian Review is to be believed, then the Cupertino-based tech giant has reportedly delayed the launch an updated version of the wireless AirPods due to the global health crisis. The news also aligns with a previous report from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who suggested that the company will delay the mass production of the third-generation AirPods until the first half of 2021. Furthermore, Kuo also claimed that the mass production of the second-generation AirPods Pro will be delayed between the fourth quarter of 2021 and the first quarter of 2022.

The report also comes at a time when a couple of days ago renowned tipster Jon Prosser, suggested that Apple has a new AirPods model “ready to ship”. However, he didn’t confirm any details on the same. If this is the case, it is unlikely that Apple would wait for another year to come out with a new model of the AirPods. The new cheaper Apple AirPods rumoured to be named as the AirPods Pro-Lite were expected to be announced in March this year, but the event was reportedly cancelled. There have also been rumours in the past that Apple is working on launching its first pair of premium wireless on-ear headphones.

Apple sees steep 71 percent growth in India in the first three months of 2020

The move to launch a cheaper yet new iPhone is seen as a very strategic one to gain a foothold in important emerging markets like India.

  • Last Updated: May 7, 2020, 4:33 PM IST

Buoyed by the super response to its iPhone XR and iPhone 11 series, Apple logged an impressive 71 per cent growth (year-on-year) in India in the first quarter of 2010, a new report said on Thursday. Apple increased its market share in India in the whole quarter, after registering over 55 per cent growth in iPhone shipments for the India market in January and February this year compared to the same period in 2019.

“The iPhone XR and iPhone 11 accounted for 70 per cent of iPhone sales in India with its prudent pricing, attractive discounts and strong shipments getting consumer acceptance,” said Prabhu Ram, Head-Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CMR. The Cupertino-based iPhone maker has seen a dramatic shift in its fortunes in India since mid-2019, with increased ‘Make in India’ manufacturing giving the impetus required for iPhones.

“Apart from increased local manufacturing, Apple found favour with customers, with its prudent pricing and refined channel strategies. In 2019, Apple’s shipments grew 17 per cent (year-on-year), on the back of the successful iPhone 11, and the iPhone XR,” said Ram.

Once the lockdown opens, the thrust on manufacturing high-end iPhones locally would give Apple a booster in the price-sensitive smartphone market. Given that the smartphone is an extension of one’s lifestyle, affluent Indian consumers, and mostly early tech adopters, are seeking the latest and the best.

“For instance, Apple iPhone loyalists have embraced the latest iPhone 11 Pro Max,” Ram noted. Apple is now eying to grab more India market share with the new iPhone SE which is packed with top-of-the-line hardware and has the potential to create much room in the aggressive Rs 40,000-Rs 50,000 segments.

The new iPhone SE still carries that same look and design as from the iPhone models a few years back and many upgraders have moved to XR or 11 in past two years with their new design and a full-screen experience. The move to launch a cheaper yet new iPhone is seen as a very strategic one to gain a foothold in important emerging markets like India.

Apple is also continuously ramping up its manufacturing capabilities through its partners in India. Apple supplier Wistron assembled low-end iPhone SE (now discontinued) and is now assembling iPhone 6S and iPhone 7 at its Bengaluru facility. The highest-selling iPhone XR is being manufactured at Apple supplier Foxconn’s facility in Sriperumbudur, Chennai.

Apple iPhone 12 Price May be Lesser Than iPhone 11 Even With 5G, Suggests Leak

Even though Apple is likely to delay the launch of iPhone 12 series because of the coronavirus pandemic, rumours continue aplenty over the company’s plans on how it will unveil its next flagship models. Most importantly, the pricing of the new iPhone 12 models is a matter of significant discussion, given the fact that the upcoming iPhone models will be equipped with 5G connectivity.

A new leak by Jon Prosser has claimed that the base model of the upcoming 5.4-inch iPhone 12 will be priced at $649 (~Rs 49,000), while the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Plus may start at $749 (~Rs 56,500). Prosser also claimed that a 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro will bear a price tag of $999 (~Rs 75,400), while the top-end 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max will cost $1,099 (~Rs 83,000).

The leaked pricing may actually be indicative of the present times, and how the year 2020 is panning out to be. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, smartphone sales across the world nosedived. Couple that with a very weak economy and jobs being at risk, many expect 2020 to not be an ideal year for flagship smartphone makers. This may be a reason why Apple might explore a more competitive pricing for its devices, and the leaked iPhone 12 price reflects on that.

As far as the pricing of the upcoming iPhone 12 series in India is concerned, as always, it will likely be more due to the import duties. Having said that, it is also important to note that Apple considers its user base in India to be increasingly important, and as a result, the lower prices may reflect on the India prices as well.

iPhone 12 Series Specs, Display and More

Talking about the specifications, Prosser has also asserted that all the four models of the iPhone 12 series will be armed with 5G support. Both the 5.4-inch and 6.1-inch iPhone 12 models will sport an OLED display, two rear cameras and will have 5G support. On the other hand, the pro models i.e. the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max will both have OLED display, three cameras, a LiDAR sensor and, 5G support. Going forward, it will be interesting to see when Apple actually unveils its iPhone 12 series smartphones and whether the company’s aim in boosting the sales of its models will eventually pay off.
