Tired of Zoom calls? Company offers at-home hologram machines

LOS ANGELES Looking for a new way to communicate during the pandemic? A Los Angeles company has created phone booth-sized machines to beam live holograms into your living room.

The device made by PORTL Inc lets users talk in real time with a life-sized hologram of another person.

The machines also can be equipped with technology to enable interaction with recorded holograms of historical figures or relatives who have passed away.

Each PORTL device is seven feet (2.1m) tall, five feet (1.5m) wide and two feet (0.6m) deep, and can be plugged into a standard wall outlet. Anyone with a camera and a white background can send a hologram to the machine in what Chief Executive David Nussbaum calls “holoportation.”

“We say if you can’t be there, you can beam there,” said Nussbaum, who previously worked at a company that developed a hologram of Ronald Reagan for the former president’s library and digitally resurrected rapper Tupac Shakur.

“We are able to connect military families that haven’t seen each other in months, people from opposite coasts,” or anyone who is social distancing to fight the coronavirus, Nussbaum added.

Prices for the machine start at $60,000, a cost that Nussbaum expects will drop over the next three to five years. The company also plans a smaller tabletop device with a lower price tag early next year.

The devices can be equipped with artificial intelligence technology from Los Angeles-based company StoryFile to produce hologram recordings that can be archived. Adding that to the current device brings the cost to at least $85,000.

The companies are promoting to museums, which could let visitors question a hologram of a historical figure, and to families to record information for future generations.

People can feel like they are having a conversation with a recorded hologram, said StoryFile Chief Executive Heather Smith.

Exclusive: TikTok's Chinese owner offers to forego stake to clinch U.S. deal – sources

NEW YORK/WASHINGTON China’s ByteDance has agreed to divest the U.S. operations of TikTok completely in a bid to save a deal with the White House, after President Donald Trump said on Friday he had decided to ban the popular short-video app, two people familiar with the matter said on Saturday.

U.S. officials have said TikTok under its Chinese parent poses a national risk because of the personal data it handles. ByteDance’s concession will test whether Trump’s threat to ban TikTok is a negotiating tactic or whether he is intent on cracking down on a social media app that has up to 80 million daily active users in the United States.

Trump told reporters onboard Air Force One late on Friday that he would issue an order for TikTok to be banned in the United States as early as Saturday. “Not the deal that you have been hearing about, that they are going to buy and sell… We are not an M&A (mergers and acquisitions) country,” Trump said.

ByteDance was previously seeking to keep a minority stake in the U.S. business of TikTok, which the White House had rejected. Under the new proposed deal, ByteDance would exit completely and Microsoft Corp would take over TikTok in the United States, the sources said.

Some ByteDance investors that are based in the United States may be given the opportunity to take minority stakes in the business, the sources added. About 70% of ByteDance’s outside investors come from the United States.

The White House declined to comment on whether Trump would accept ByteDance’s concession. ByteDance in Beijing did not respond to a request for comment

Under ByteDance’s new proposal, Microsoft will be in charge of protecting all U.S. user data, the sources said. The plan allows for another U.S. company other than Microsoft to take over TikTok in the United States, the sources added.

Microsoft did not respond to a request for comment.

As relations between the United States and China deteriorate over trade, Hong Kong’s autonomy, cyber security and the spread of the novel coronavirus, TikTok has emerged as a flashpoint in the dispute between the world’s two largest economies.

ByteDance has been considering a range of options for TikTok amid U.S. pressure to relinquish control of the app, which allows users to create short videos with special effects and has become wildly popular with U.S. teenagers.

ByteDance had received a proposal from some of its investors, including Sequoia and General Atlantic, to transfer majority ownership of TikTok to them, Reuters reported on Wednesday. The proposal valued TikTok at about $50 billion, but some ByteDance executives believe the app is worth more than that.

ByteDance acquired Shanghai-based video app Musical.ly in a $1 billion deal in 2017 and relaunched it as TikTok the following year. ByteDance did not seek approval for the acquisition from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), which reviews deals for potential national security risks. Reuters reported last year that CFIUS had opened an investigation into TikTok.

APP SCRUTINY

The United States has been increasingly scrutinizing app developers over the personal data they handle, especially if some of it involves U.S. military or intelligence personnel. Ordering the divestment of TikTok would not be the first time the White House has taken action over such concerns.

Earlier this year, Chinese gaming company Beijing Kunlun Tech Co Ltd sold Grindr LLC, a popular gay dating app it bought in 2016, for $620 million after being ordered by CFIUS to divest.

In 2018, CFIUS forced China’s Ant Financial to scrap plans to buy MoneyGram International Inc over concerns about the safety of data that could identify U.S. citizens.

ByteDance was valued at as much as $140 billion earlier this year when one of its shareholders, Cheetah Mobile, sold a small stake in a private deal, Reuters has reported. The startup’s investors include Japan’s SoftBank Group Corp.

Amazon Prime Day Sale: Offers on Smartphones, Smart TVs, Gaming Consoles and More

The Amazon Prime Day sale is making a comeback this August. The e-commerce giant has been hosting its annual two-day sale in the month of July, but there has been a delay this year due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The 2020 edition of the Amazon Prime Day sale is scheduled for August 6 and 7 where you can expect a variety of discounts and deals on smartphones, smart TVs, laptops, gaming consoles and a bunch of other consumer electronics.

Amazon has partnered with HDFC Bank to offer a 10-percent instant discount if you happen to use the bank’s credit card or debit card. Additionally, there will be no-cost EMI options as well as 5-percent reward point and 5-percent instant discount for Amazon Pay ICICI Bank credit card owners.

Apart from Xiaomi’s Mi TV range, we are expecting the new OnePlus TV range to be available with some discounts. Brands like Vu, Thomson and TCL are also expected to be a part of the sale. Last but not the least, expect some deals on premium 4K smart TVs from Samsung, Sony and LG.

Gaming Consoles

If you can’t wait or are just not impressed with the upcoming PS5 or Xbox Series X for some reason, you could grab the PS4 Pro or the Xbox One X. Tata Sky Broadband Now Offers Increased 3Mbps Speeds After You Finish Your Data Limit

If you are using a Tata Sky Broadband unlimited plan, then there’s good news. The company is now offering increased 3Mbps post fair usage policy (FUP) speeds, up from the existing 2Mbps. This basically means that once users finish their FUP limit, they can continue using the broadband connection at 3Mbps. The new update is only applicable for users of the unlimited data plans priced between Rs 700 to Rs 1,900 a month.

While Tata Sky hasn’t made an official announcement, the update in post FUP speeds is now visible on the company’s broadband website. The Tata Sky Broadband says that the new FUP speed will come into place after consuming 3,300GB data on the 300Mbps plan and 1,500GB data on other unlimited plans.

tata-sky-fup-speeds

Notably, Tata Sky Broadband started offering a new 300Mbps speed plan back in May. The company offers four unlimited plans in most of the popular metro cities including a Rs 950 that offers speeds up to 25Mbps. Then there is the Rs 1050 plan and offers 50Mbps, the Rs 1150 gets you 100Mbps speed and a flagship plan for Rs 1900 which offers 300Mbps speed. This brings it closer to the similar speed home broadband plans offered by the likes Airtel Broadband and Spectra, for instance. Earlier, Tata Sky Broadband’s options capped out at 100Mbps speeds.
