Aarogya Setu Android App Now Open Source, Rs 1 Lakh Bug Bounty Programme Announced

Aarogya Setu Android App Now Open Source, Rs 1 Lakh Bug Bounty Programme Announced

The source code of the Android app of Aarogya Setu will be released on GitHub after midnight tonight, and code improvement programme has also been introduced for the app.

  • Last Updated: May 26, 2020, 7:55 PM IST

The government of India has finally open sourced the source code of the Android application of the Aarogya Setu contact tracing app. Earlier today, Amitabh Kant, CEO of Niti Aayog, stated that the source code of the iOS version of Aarogya Setu will also be opened up “soon”. The code was released by Kant, along with K Vijay Raghavan, the principal scientific advisor of India, and Dr Neeta Varma, the director general of the National Informatics Commission of India.

The source code of the Android app of Aarogya Setu will be uploaded to GitHub after midnight tonight. Speaking at the launch, Kant said that “opening the source code to developers’ community signifies Government of India’s commitment to the core design principles of transparency, privacy and security.” He further added that Aarogya Setu was the fastest app in the world to reach 15 million users in 13 days, and 100 million in 41 days.

Alongside releasing the code, Ajay Prakash Sawhney, the secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) emphasised on how the app was developed as a public private partnership basis, and was largely developed by “volunteers”, who came together to build the app. On this note, Varma of NIC also announced a bug bounty programme, which will offer cash rewards of up to Rs 1 lakh to everyone that will report bugs, code frailties and improvements to the government. The bug bounty programme will be run by MyGov, as its chief executive Abhishek Singh stated.

The bug bounty programme will offer three different kinds of privacy bug bounties, and one code improvement programme, all of which will offer prizes worth up to Rs 1 lakh. On this note, Varma also stated that while this is the first bug bounty programme, it may also spell a future where all tech integrations made by official government deployments can go through similar checks.

Talking at the launch, government of India officials claimed the effort of open sourcing the Aarogya Setu code to be the “first of its kind” in the world, where an app’s source code was opened up after over 100 million downloads. The officials stated that Aarogya Setu has now been installed on 115 million devices, of which an overwhelming majority has come from Android devices. While the officials were quick to talk about the benefits of the Aarogya Setu app, it is important to note that India is not setting the precedent here – Singapore has already open sourced its official Covid-19 contact tracing app, months ago.

Many cyber security and cyber law experts had already called out for open sourcing the source code of the Aarogya Setu app, in order to accommodate developers to independently inspect all the privacy issues of the Aarogya Setu app. The government officials further stated that the move will set a major precedent – not just for all Indian government apps in the future, but also for other governments across the world to follow.

The X-T4 comes combined with the fastest ever autofocus performance in an X series camera, thanks to the development of a new algorithm, Fujifilm said.

  • Last Updated: May 25, 2020, 5:10 PM IST

Japanese photography and imaging major Fujifilm on Monday launched X-T4, the latest addition to its flagship X series range of mirrorless digital cameras, in India at a starting price of Rs 154,999. Unveiled virtually on the company’s YouTube channel amid Covid-19 restrictions, X-T4 is the first model in the X-T Series to feature in-body image stabilisation (IBIS), boosting the potential of the camera for stills and video shooting.

The X-T4 comes combined with the fastest ever autofocus performance in an X series camera, thanks to the development of a new algorithm, the company said. Fujifilm also introduced in the product a new shutter unit that has been developed keeping in mind the needs and demands of the users for the camera to be fast, durable and quiet.

The shutter unit boasts double durability with 300,000 shutter life and its shutter noise is approximately 30 per cent quieter compared to the X-T3. “The retro dials and analogue chic in the outside and the highly advanced packed features in the inside makes the X-T4 a truly compelling combination. Now our consumers can free themselves from compromise and be the image-maker they’ve always wanted to be,” said Haruto Iwata, Managing Director, Fujifilm India Pvt Ltd.

The variant comes equipped with the standalone video mode, which is now activated with a simple switch, and the use of digital image stabilisation in the video mode. The new Film Simulation mode, ETERNA Bleach Bypass, simulates the traditional film processing technique to create a unique world of low saturation and high contrast.

The NP-W235 battery has a large capacity that is approximately 1.5 times that of an NP-W126S battery. It lasts for approximately 500 frames per charge in the Normal mode, approximately 600 frames per charge in the Economy mode and up to approximately 1,700 frames when two additional batteries are used with the optional battery grip “VG-XT4”, the company said.

Oppo Find X2 to Cost Rs 69,990 in India Reveals Amazon India Listing

Oppo Find X2 to Cost Rs 69,990 in India Reveals Amazon India Listing

An Amazon India listing revealed that the handset could launch in India with a price tag of Rs 69,990.

  • News18.com
  • Last Updated: May 23, 2020, 12:37 PM IST

Oppo had announced that it would soon launch its flagship, the Find X2, in India. While the company hasn’t given any details around the launch date or pricing, Amazon India seems to have spoiled the company’s plan by listing the product on its website.

According to a report, an Amazon India listing for the Oppo Find X2 (12GB+256GB model) has been spotted. The listing doesn’t confirm the launch date, however, the source code of the webpage suggests that the handset could be priced at Rs 69,990. The final price of the handset could effectively change. Apart from the price, the listing also mentions some of the specifications of the upcoming phone. Notably the listing has been removed by Amazon India.

The Oppo Find X2 series was unveiled back in March and the company had confirmed earlier this month that it would launch the handset in India soon.

Oppo Find X2 Specifications

The Oppo Find X2 features a 6.7-inch QHD+ Ultra Vision display offering 120Hz refresh rate protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection. The handset runs on a Snapdragon 865 processor paired with 12GB of RAM.

At the back there is a triple rear camera setup featuring a 48-megapixel primary camera, a 12-megapixel camera, and a 13-megapixel camera. At the front there is a 32-megapixel camera to take selfies. The handset comes with a 4,200mAh battery along with support for 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 Flash Charge. Other features include an in-display fingerprint scanner, 5G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth v5.1, GPS, NFC, and USB Type-C port.

Realme Buds Air Neo Launching in India on May 25, Could be Priced at Rs 2,999

Realme Buds Air Neo Launching in India on May 25, Could be Priced at Rs 2,999

Realme will be launching the new Buds Air Neo alongside the new Realme smart TV range on May 25.

  • News18.com
  • Last Updated: May 22, 2020, 12:42 PM IST

Realme is going to host an online event on May 25 in India where it is expected to launch its first smart TV product. It is also expected to launch a new pair of true wireless earphones dubbed as the Realme Buds Air Neo. As per a report, these new earphones are going to be priced at Rs 2,999, lower than the company’s first TWS offering, the Buds Air.

The company has not shared the official price of the Buds Air Neo, however, a leaked poster was spotted by MySmartPrice. The upcoming earphones are expected to go on sale via Flipkart, Realme.com, as well as offline stores.

While the Buds Air Neo are expected to be a successor to the existing Buds Air, the lower price seems to indicate that it could be a toned-down version. The company has teased some of the specifications for the upcoming true wireless earphones via a teaser page. Expect the Buds Air Neo to feature 13mm drivers, 3 hours of playback on a single charge, and 17 hours of playback with the charging case.

They will feature Bluetooth 5.0 hence they will also bring support for dual-channel transmission along with super-low latency mode. The company says that they will offer 50 percent lower latency compared to normal mode, which means that these could be great for gaming as well. Like the Buds Air, the upcoming Buds Air Neo will offer touch controls for music control, voice assistance, and more.

This is the fifth investment in the Reliance Jio Platforms, and that too, in rapid succession, following those by Facebook, multinational private equity firm Silver Lake, Vista Equity Partners, and General Atlantic over the past few weeks. Vodafone Rs 98 Prepaid Recharge Now Offers 12GB 4G Data Instead of 6GB

Image for representation.

The Rs 98 pack from Vodafone previously offered only 6GB data for 28 days.

  • News18.com
  • Last Updated: May 22, 2020, 1:38 PM IST

Vodafone India has revised its prepaid recharge pack priced at Rs 98, to now offer twice the amount of data in comparison to what it offered before. While the Rs 98 prepaid recharge previously offered 6GB of 4G data for 28 days, it has now been revised to offer double data, i.e. 12GB, at the same price. The move comes after market rival Bharti Airtel updated their own Rs 98 prepaid recharge pack to offer 12GB data to users for a 28-day period, instead of 6GB.

According to reports, the Rs 98 prepaid plan is presently available only in select circles. However, News18 could confirm that the plan is already available in major metropolitan circles such as Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata, which indicates that the double data benefit with the Rs 98 plan may be rolled out as a cross-country plan, soon. With Vodafone and Idea being partner operators now, the revision has also been reflected on Idea’s website, where the Rs 98 prepaid plan is now stated to offer 12GB of data, instead of 6GB.

The Vodafone Rs 98 prepaid recharge pack does not come with any calling minutes or SMS benefits. Hence, it only acts as a data top-up plan that can offer users an additional amount of data on top of a base recharge, which itself may come with integrated data benefits. The Rs 98 pack also does not offer any complementary content benefits such as Zee5 or Vodafone Play, which typically come bundled with many prepaid plans.

Work From Home Buying Guide: Best Laptops Under Rs 40,000 With Windows 10 & Chrome OS

E-commerce is open again. This means you can now order from Amazon and Flipkart and the orders will be delivered to you in all parts of the country, except in containment zones. This must come as a great relief for those who suddenly shifted to the world from home routine ahead of the lockdown to flatten the COVID curve, a few weeks ago. Chances are, you may not have had a good laptop or PC at home, for it perhaps wasn’t really a critical requirement thus far. But now, you can buy a new laptop or PC to rock the work from home situation, and not be bogged down by an aging and sluggish PC, a bad keyboard, a cracked screen or something you were simply bored of. It is also expected that work from home will be quite a regular thing for a lot of workers in a lot of companies, which means you should be armed with a good computing device.

Do not make the same mistake again of thinking the smartphone can be a PC replacement, because when it really comes down to it, you will need a laptop to get genuine work done. Here are some of the best budget laptops, some running Windows 10 and some Google Chromebook options, which you must add to your arsenal of work from home tools. So that this purchase remains light on your pocket, we are looking at laptops under the Rs 40,000 price point—to get the perfect blend between performance and longevity without breaking the bank. Plus, they should look good too.

HP Chromebook x360 - 12b-ca0006tu

HP Chromebook x360 – 12b-ca0006tu

Around Rs32,990

The biggest advantage of the Google Chrome OS software for computing devices is the sheer simplicity of everything. It is incorrect to assume that you must be locked into the Google ecosystem to be able to use a Chromebook—the variety of apps available for the Chrome OS is as wide as Android phones. That is why the full-fledged Play Store is also available on the Chromebooks. Microsoft’s Word, Excel and PowerPoint apps? The Spotify app? Video streaming apps. You name it, and the whole wide world of productivity, utility and entertainment apps are available. For any Android phone user, the switch could prove to be close to seamless—and that is a genuine value addition. In fact, this works brilliantly with the Intel Celeron N4000 processor with 4GB RAM, 64GB internal storage and a card slot if you wish to use that for adding more storage space. What’s most interesting is the square-is aspect ratio of the 12-inch display, and the hinge allows it to be folded all the way back into a sort of a tablet mode. Windows machines have never performed as well on this sort of hardware.

Dell Inspiron 14 5490

Dell Inspiron 14 5490

Around Rs 35,585

This started out with a price tag above the Rs 40,000 mark but price corrections have now pushed this beneath that virtual ceiling we have for this buying advice. That means you get the newer 10th generation Intel Core i3-10110U processor with 4GB RAM and a fast 512GB SSD. There is a 14-inch Full HD display which should do well for most productivity and entertainment tasks. The keyboard is not backlit though—perhaps you need to keep that in mind in case working in a dimly lit room is your thing. Dell’s ExpressCharge Boost tops up a fully discharged battery to 35% in 20 minutes and up to 80% in 60 minutes—great if you need to splash and dash. Then there is the Dell Mobile Connect app which pairs your iPhone or Android smartphone with your laptop, which mirrors most things from your phone on the laptop itself, thereby reducing distractions.

Lenovo IdeaPad 330

Lenovo IdeaPad 330

Around Rs 19,990

If you really are on a strict budget, the Lenovo IdeaPad 330 (model number: 330-15IKB) could be a steady enough pick. Do not expect this to be powerful or do anything more than basic computing, but what you get is a comfortable 15.6-inch HD display. This runs an Intel Celeron processor, along with 4GB RAM. There is a 1TB hard drive, and these basic specs are really all you should expect at this price. While there are many similarly priced laptops that don’t give you a preloaded Windows 10 operating system, this one does—and that is very important. A keyboard that is well laid out and the build quality doesn’t really betray its budget price tag.

Acer Aspire 5 A515-43

Acer Aspire 5 A515-43

Around Rs 38,369

This started out in life with a price tag around Rs 50,000 and that means you get specifications which are quite powerful. This runs the AMD Ryzen 5 3500U quad-core processor (for some reason, many potential laptop buyers still have a bit of mistrust towards AMD machines). This has 4GB of RAM to get Windows 10 and your apps purring along. What should also make a difference is the 512GB SSD, which will speed up performance. You get a 15.6-inch Full HD IPS display. The keyboard isn’t backlit. The laptop weighs around 1.8kg. You should probably also consider this if you are taken in by the large screen goodness of the Lenovo IdeaPad S145 (model number 81W800FXIN).

Lenovo IdeaPad S145

Lenovo IdeaPad S145

Around Rs 35,010

We are specifically talking about the Lenovo IdeaPad S145 (model number 81W800FXIN) which runs the Intel Core i3-1005G1 processor with 4GB RAM and 256GB SSD. It looks like it means business and has the sort of serious personality that most good productivity centric machines have. This is ideal if you prefer large displays—this has a 15.6-inch Full HD screen for you to work on. Not the lightest, tipping the scales at 1.85kg, but that’s the compromise for a large screen laptop. You will quite like the keyboard, which has the sort of inspiration from the more expensive ThinkPad laptops, which make these genuinely good to type on. Lenovo also doesn’t clutter Windows 10 too much by preloading apps, which should also be good in the long run.

HP Notebook - 15s-du0093tu

HP Notebook – 15s-du0093tu

Around Rs38,990

And this price point, you get multiple laptops running the older generation Intel Core processors as well as some Celeron versions. However, this HP Notebook – 15s-du0093tu should hold up well with the Intel Core i3-8145U processor, with 8GB RAM and a 1TB hard drive. What you get is a 15-inch Full HD display, Windows 10 preloaded and six months of 25GB bundled Dropbox storage. This weighs 1.74kg and is 19.9mm thick. You also get a fingerprint sensor as an added authentication layer to keep your data safe. The HP Fast Charge feature charges a fully discharged laptop battery to 50% in 45 minutes, which should be handy in case you need to get stuff done in a hurry and don’t have access to power at the time. Oh, and the keyboard is backlit too.
