Google unveils first 5G phones, cuts price on base Pixel model

Google’s first 5G-enabled phones, Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5, will be available this fall at a starting price of $499, the Alphabet Inc unit said on Monday.

The company also cut the starting price for its smartphone lineup with a non-5G version of 4a priced at $349, looking to broaden its appeal among budget-conscious customers.

Like Apple Inc , which launched a smaller iPhone priced at $399 this April, Google’s budget-priced smartphone reflects reaching out to consumers who have been hit by the coronavirus-led economic downturn.

Google’s lower-priced devices have been top sellers, but are far from being major profit drivers. Higher-priced devices have gained little traction versus those from industry leaders such as Samsung Electronics Co and Apple because of limited marketing and stiff competition.

This week, Samsung is expected to unveil new flagship smartphones, including the Galaxy Note and a foldable phone, as well as expand sales of mid-tier models, aiming to fend off competition from China’s Huawei, which recently snatched the title of biggest smartphone seller in the second quarter.

Google’s non-5G Pixel 4a will start $50 lower than what was previously the cheapest Pixel phone available, the 3a, which is being retired.

The pandemic had derailed the search giant’s original launch dates for 4a, which will now be available for delivery from Aug. 20 in the United States.

Google has launched an interactive video shopping platform called Shoploop that will help people experience the look and feel of products they like to shop for in real life, without going to a physical store. The app, developed by Google’s in-house lab for experimental projects named ‘Area 120’ is now available on mobile and the desktop version will be rolled out soon, the company said in a statement on Thursday.

Shoploop also helps users get product reviews from real people who are knowledgeable about the products in a particular area.

Once you find a product that interests you, you can either save the product to buy it later or click straight to the merchant’s website to complete the purchase. You can also follow your favourite Shoploop creators and share videos you like with your friends and family. Google said that currently, it is focused on content creators, publishers and online store owners in the beauty industry in categories such as makeup, skincare, hair and nails. “If you are a content creator or a store owner in any of these product areas, you can apply through our website to be an exclusive Shoploop creator,” said the company.

Finnish telecoms equipment maker Nokia launched the software on Tuesday that enables mobile operators to upgrade their 4G radio stations to new 5G technology without a site visit or replacing equipment. “This solution will save the telecommunications industry potentially tens of billions of euros in site engineering and re-visit costs,” Nokia said in a statement. Nokia said the software upgrade was available immediately for about one million radio stations, growing to 3.1 million by the end of the year and to over 5 million in 2021.

“By upgrading existing radio elements via software, Nokia is helping to streamline the process of refarming 4G spectrum into 5G,” the company said. Last week, Nokia became the first major telecoms equipment maker to commit to adding open interfaces in its products, a trend that will give the software a central role in future mobile networks.
