Be Warned! Windows 10 May 2020 Update Can Potentially Render Your PC Useless

Microsoft has confirmed this update may potentially cause some issues with your PC after the update. That risk, in the critical times of work from home, is perhaps not the best idea.

  • Last Updated: May 31, 2020, 10:06 AM IST

There is a lot broken with the Windows 10 May 2020 Update. As it is, this latest update, which bumps up your PC to Windows 10 2004 version, does bring significant new features as well as performance tweaks for all compatible PCs. However, you might just want to hold off for a while because Microsoft has confirmed this update may potentially cause some issues with your PC after the update. That risk, in the critical times of work from home, is perhaps not the best idea.

So, here is what it is. The Windows 10 May 2020 Update does reportedly cause issues with certain Nvidia display adapters, breaks the Always On, Always Connected functionality with some network adapters and causes restarts including those in the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 and Microsoft Surface Laptop 3, Conexant and Synaptics audio devices may not work well, the ability to connect with more than one Bluetooth device may be broken, variable display refresh rates with Intel graphics may not work and the functionality of certain Thunderbolt docks may be restricted. Microsoft has also confirmed that PCs that take advantage of the Fast Start option, will have trouble installing the Windows 10 May 2020 Update—users will need to manually restart their PCs for the update to be completely installed.

These issues crop up even after Microsoft took additional steps to ensure your PC is compatible with the update and also verify if all functionality will work after the update. Microsoft has also restricted the roll-out of the update to those who manually Check for Updates, instead of installing it automatically to PCs—at least that is for the time being.

The Windows 10 May 2020 Update bundles the new Edge browser, which is well placed to compete with Google Chrome, and rolls it out by default for all users. There are performance improvements across the board, updates to Your Phone and Cortana apps as well as more powerful virtual desktops. The Task Manager gets new features as well, with the GPU Temperature data now available for compatible hardware. The Swift Pair for Bluetooth accessories has been further simplified. The Settings app gets some design changes, while Windows Hello biometric authentication for compatible PCs adds a new layer of security for your data.

Microsoft has also depreciated or reduced the functionality of certain features in Windows 10. This includes the scaled back Cortana virtual assistant, Snipping Tool which is replaced by Snip & Sketch, OneSync Service which now has an alternative built into Outlook, MyPeople app and Windows to Go, to name a few. Some of these features, apps and options might still be around, but the writing seems to be on the wall for most of these and may be removed in subsequent software updates.

The new ‘Quick Settings’ feature, once rolled out, will be available by clicking the ‘See all settings’ button at the top of the new quick settings menu.

Google has rolled out a new “Quick Settings” menu on Gmail that will help users find and use different themes, layouts, and settings to customise their email experience in a unique way. Google said that the new settings on the desktop interface will not improve the UI but also makes Gmail much easier to access.

Detailing the announcement via a blog post, Google said the new settings will also include customising the email density, choosing a new inbox type, adding reading panes to quickly see email contents, and applying new themes to personalise the Gmail inbox. Notably, the company said that the settings will be updated in real-time on the user’s screen.

Talking about the Quick Settings feature, it will be available by clicking the “See all settings” button at the top of the new quick settings menu. Once you click that, Gmail will pop up multiple options on the right side of the inbox for easier access. And, as Google mentioned, you will be able to see the change almost immediately.

“We’re making these options easier to find, and letting you explore them in real-time, so your actual inbox will update immediately to show you exactly what the setting will do. We hope this makes it easier to set up Gmail the way that works best for you,” Google said in the blog post.

Google further said that it launched the new update for G Suite customers on Rapid Release domains on May 26 with the rollout completing within 15 days. On the other hand, those on Scheduled Release domains will see the new feature starting on June 22. However, Google didn’t mention as to when personal Gmail users would finally get the update.

The Windows 10 May 2020 Update is now finally rolling out for PCs globally. This is a pretty major update in the Windows 10 update cycle, with significant changes under-the-hood adding new functionality and performance fixes for apps as well as across the board. The Windows 10 May 2020 update will bump up the Windows 10 version on your PC to 2004. You can download the Windows 10 May 2020 Update in two different ways, on any Windows 10 desktop, laptop, convertible or tablet.

The first method that you should try is the trusted Windows Update. For this, click on the Start Menu on your Windows computer desktop (the Windows icon on the bottom left of the screen) and open the Settings app. Here, click on the Update & Security option and then select Windows Update. Here, you may need to click on Check for Updates, in case Windows 10 hasn’t already done the search for you just yet. The Windows 10 2004 version should be listed here for download. You can go ahead and download this update from here. The installation size varies from PC to PC, and the download time will depend a lot on your internet speeds.

Windows 10 May 2020 Update-2

In case your Windows Update does not list the Windows 10 May 2020 Update, or the Windows 10 2004 update, you can also manually download this file. It can be done by going to Microsoft.com and selecting Windows 10 -> How to Get Windows 10 from the options bar on the top of the screen. You will see the Check for Updates option on the web page, along with other purchase options for Windows 10. Select the former and it will take you to a support page for Windows 10. Here are multiple troubleshooting steps for Windows Update in general, but what stands out is the option to “Get the Windows 10 May 2020 Update”. Click on this and it takes you to another support page which lets you manually download something known as the Update Assistant. Once that assistant is downloaded (it’s around 10MB in size), simply run it and it’ll detect which version of Windows 10 you are running and whether the Windows 10 May 2020 Update, or the Windows 10 2004 update, is compatible with your computing device. If yes, you can proceed to download it from here.

Windows 10 May 2020 Update-3

The Windows 10 May 2020 Update bundles the new Edge browser, which is well placed to compete with Google Chrome, and rolls it out by default for all users. There are performance improvements across the board, updates to Your Phone and Cortana apps as well as more powerful virtual desktops. The Task Manager gets new features as well, with the GPU Temperature data now available for compatible hardware. The Swift Pair for Bluetooth accessories has been further simplified. The Settings app gets some design changes, while Windows Hello biometric authentication for compatible PCs adds a new layer of security for your data.

That trepidation may be for good reason. The recent history of Windows 10 updates doesn’t exactly infuse a lot of confidence, considering its broken critical functionality, including internet connectivity for a lot of users.

The Windows 10 May 2020 Update is now finally rolling out for PCs. This is the major update in the Windows 10 update cycle, with significant changes under-the-hood as well as in terms of adding new functionality and performance fixes for apps and in general across the board. The Windows 10 May 2020 update will bump up the Windows 10 version on your PC to 2004. The new Edge browser, which is well placed to compete with Google Chrome, is now being rolled out for all users as part of this update.

If however, you are working from home because of the Coronavirus pandemic and don’t want to take any risks with any possible broken functionality on your PC because of a Windows update, there is a way to pause the download and install of the Windows 10 May 2020 Update for a while. And that trepidation may be with good reason. The recent history of Windows 10 updates doesn’t exactly infuse a lot of confidence, considering its broken critical functionality, including internet connectivity for a lot of users. With the new update on the horizon, you might want to hang on for a while and not update—just to see what feedback the new update gets from other users who do. You can pause updates from downloading and installing on your Windows 10 PC for up to 7 days at a time or select a time frame up to 35 days to stay update-free. Here is how to do it.

Click on the Windows 10 icon on the bottom left of the screen to open the start menu. Here, select the Settings menu, which opens a new app window. Here, either scroll down to find Windows Update or search for it. This opens the update page, which shows the list of pending updates if any, and the download as well as install status for each of these. Look a bit further down on this page, and you will see the “Pause Updates for 7 days” option. This is the ticket. You can select this option to pause the automatic download and install of the Windows 10 updates for up to a week at a time, and you need to keep repeating it for the paused situation to continue.

If you want a bit more freedom in terms of selecting the window in which you don’t want Windows 10 to update, you must scroll a bit further down on the Windows Update page and select the Advanced option. This takes you to a further set of options, and here you can select a date up to 35 days from that time, to keep Windows Update from doing any automatic installations.

Recently, Windows 10 users have had bad luck with the updates rolled out for their PCs. Over the past couple of months, we have had the KB4554364 update and the KB4549951 update for instance, which saw users reporting on Microsoft’s own community forums about errors with the installation, some report serious performance hit, some say critical apps are no longer working while some report the updates broke Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functionality. This can be a big problem for people working from home right now and have a PC or laptop they rely on extensively right now to get work done.

Windows 10 May 2020 Update is Now Live: The Big Changes Version 2004 Brings to Your Computer

Windows 10 May 2020 Update is Now Live: The Big Changes Version 2004 Brings to Your Computer

Microsoft Edge web browser, which now runs on Chromium, is being distributed with this update. That means anyone who still hadn’t updated Edge on their PCs will get the new and more powerful web browser by default.

  • Last Updated: May 28, 2020, 9:38 AM IST

The much-awaited Windows 10 May 2020 update is now available for download via the Windows Update on all compatible Windows 10 computing devices. This is a pretty big update, not just in terms of the bug fixes and new features, but also gets significant under-the-hood changes. The Windows 10 May 2020 update will bump up the Windows 10 version on your PC to 2004, from perhaps Windows 10 1909 that you may already be using. Microsoft is also talking about improvements to what they call the ‘go-to’ apps as millions around the world are working from home due to the Coronavirus pandemic. You can now check for the Windows 10 May 2020 Update and download from Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Update.

Microsoft Edge web browser, which now runs on Chromium, is being distributed with this update. That means anyone who still hadn’t updated Edge on their PCs will get the new and more powerful web browser by default. Microsoft also says that there are memory improvements that land now—the latest version of Edge on the Windows 10 May 2020 update uses up to 27% lesser RAM than before. If nothing else, this is just another nudge to get you to switch from the resource hungry Google Chrome web browser, which is also based on the same Chromium innards.

There are updates across the board.

The Cortana assistant has been updated with a new chat-based interface where you can either speak or type your requests. The new and updated interface can be accessed from the Windows 10 taskbar and there are now quick searches for weather, news and more.

If you prefer to not pick up your Android phone and respond to calls as well as messages from the PC itself, the Your Phone app has been given the newer powers you probably were waiting for. Microsoft says will now be able to place, receive, or text reply to your incoming phone calls directly on your PC without having your Android phone right next to you. The Your Phone app also lets you send or receive texts, check new notifications and access the photo gallery on your Android phone, for instance, on the PC itself.

The biggest under-the-hood change to the May 2020 Update is the inclusion of the Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL 2), with a custom-built Linux kernel. This should help improve the performance of Microsoft’s Linux subsystem in Windows.

If you are someone who juggles with a lot of apps, the updated Virtual Desktops feature should be quite useful in organizing open apps and switching between them. This is very similar to the multiple desktop functionality that Apple macOS Catalina also has for Mac computing devices and allows you to keep certain apps in different windows to reduce the clutter. These virtual desktops can also be renamed in Windows 10.

This week could be an important one for Windows 10 users. Microsoft is set to release the biggest update for Windows 10 PCs for far this year, and it is expected to be rolled out this week. It is expected that the Windows 10 May 2020 update, as it is known, will bring the new Chromium-based Edge web browser, end of support for 32-bit versions, new icons for system apps such as Explorer, improvements for graphics performance and the ability to reinstall Windows 10 from the cloud, among other things. That’s all fantastic news but hang on for a moment.

You Will Have to Update to Zoom 5.0 by May 30 Because Video Calls Move to The New Encryption

You Will Have to Update to Zoom 5.0 by May 30 Because Video Calls Move to The New Encryption

Once the new AES 256-bit GCM encryption is active, you will see a green shield icon in your video call window to confirm that the conversation is being encrypted with the new standard.

  • News18.com
  • Last Updated: May 25, 2020, 9:26 AM IST

Zoom, the incredibly popular video meeting app, is asking all users to update to the new Zoom 5.0 version before the end of the month. In an email communication with existing users, Zoom says they must update to the Zoom 5.0 version to take advantage of the new AES 256-bit GCM encryption. This comes at a time when Zoom is seeing usage skyrocket, but concerns remain about the privacy and security issues regarding video calls and user data. Zoom has more than 300 million daily users around the world.

The GCM (Galois/Counter Mode) encryption method will be enabled for all Zoom calls from May 30 onwards, and anyone using a Zoom app version older than Zoom 5 will be unable to join. Zoom had released this update late last month. “Beginning May 30th, 2020, Zoom will be enabling GCM encryption across the entire Zoom platform, providing increased protection for meeting data,” says the email sent to Zoom users.

Till now, Zoom has been using the 128-bit AES keys and with ECB (Electronic Code Book) encryption, which is less secure. Once the new AES 256-bit GCM encryption is active, you will see a green shield icon in your video call window to confirm that the conversation is being encrypted with the new standard. “A new encryption shield appears in the upper left of your Zoom Meeting window and indicates a secure, encrypted meeting. After May 30, the shield will be green for all users, denoting enhanced GCM encryption. Clicking the icon also takes you to the Statistics page for additional encryption details,” says the company. All parties in a Zoom call need to be on the Zoom 5 version of the app for the encryption to work.

Zoom has since also received new features, including the ability to report a user who may be misusing Zoom, updated Leave Now or End Meeting options and select data center regions when scheduling a meeting. Zoom is available for PCs, web browsers, Android devices, Apple iPhone, Apple iPad and Google ChromeOS. At a time when millions around the world are working from home to stay safe from the Coronavirus pandemic, video calling apps are more relevant than ever before. Zoom is competing with the likes of WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Skype, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Google Hangouts, Houseparty and more.

WhatsApp Beta Update Brings Profile QR Codes to Let You Add Contacts Easily

WhatsApp Beta Update Brings Profile QR Codes to Let You Add Contacts Easily

The new QR Code feature is currently available on WhatsApp Beta, but there is no word on the official launch yet.

  • News18.com
  • Last Updated: May 22, 2020, 8:07 PM IST

WhatsApp is all set to introduce a Snapchat-like feature that will now make it easier for users to add new contacts just by scanning a QR code. The QR code feature, which is assumed to have been in development for quite some time, will be rolled out to both iOS and Android devices, and will offer a unique QR code to every user to help add contacts easily.

According to WABetaInfo, the QR Code feature will appear under the Profile settings. Sharing it will allow a user to let anyone add them to their contacts list, without going through the convoluted process that is in place right now. To add contacts, there will also be an option to ‘scan code’, which will allow users to add a contact to WhatsApp directly.

The QR code contact addition feature can be particularly beneficial to WhatsApp Business users, who can quickly share their contacts to receive orders or payments. This can particularly find implementation in shops that use WhatsApp for official purposes, and may also enhance the WhatsApp Pay experience that is set to be rolled out some time in future.

As for the public launch of the QR code feature, there is no word on when might this feature roll out in the stable build. WhatsApp has had an erratic history with beta features, and while some features have made it to the stable builds quite swiftly, others, such as the much hyped Dark Mode, took rather look to come out of beta. Reports further suggest that the QR code scanning feature of WhatsApp may also allude to the multi-device account support that is expected soon, which may also be coming soon.

Google has announced more controls for users who are sharing personal albums in Google Photos more than ever before in Covid-19 times. Last December, Google launched direct sharing to make it easy to share one-off photos and videos in Google Photos by adding them to an ongoing, private conversation in the app.

“We’re bringing a similar experience to shared albums. Rolling out this week, when sharing an album, the default option will be to share with a specific person or people via their Google account,” Google said in a statement. This gives users more control over who’s added to the album.

Users will still have the option to share albums in Google Photos via a link, which they can embed in an email, text, or blog to make it easy to share photos with people who don’t use Google Photos or have a Google account. “You have the option to turn link sharing on or off at any time and you can decide if you want to let other collaborators add photos to an album,” said Google.

You’ll also be able to remove someone from the album, which will remove the photos and videos they added. Since the start of COVID-19, sharing in Google Photos has increased by 50 percent in some regions, according to the company.
