Twitter Says It May Allow Users to 'Edit' Tweets But Under One Condition

Twitter says it will roll out the much-anticipated Edit button if everyone wears a face mask to help health authorities fight the Covid-19 pandemic globally. In a series of tweets, the micro-blogging platform emphasised on maintaining social distancing and wear a mask. “You can have an edit button when everyone wears a mask,” Twitter said on Thursday.

“Everyone means EVERYONE”. Twitter users have been asking for an Edit button to avoid embarrassment when they accidentally send tweets with typos and spelling errors. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has said the Edit button will “probably” never happen.

“We started as an SMS, text message service. And as you all know, when you send a text, you can’t really take it back. We wanted to preserve that vibe, that feeling, in the early days,” Dorsey said recently. Users immediately reacted to Twitter’s new offer for an Edit button. “Ok, Twitter has now given me one reason not to wear a mask,” tweeted columnist Doug Saunders Another commented: “Ok, I’m going to stop wearing a mask then because an edit button would be utter chaos and everyone at Twitter has always known it”.

Facebook, Instagram to Advice Users in US to Wear Masks to Prevent Spread of Covid-19

Both Facebook and Instagram will now show an alert on top of the News Feed to encourage users to wear face masks in the US. The social network said that with the rise in COVID-19 cases in the US, they will put an alert at the top of Facebook and Instagram to remind everyone to wear face coverings and find more prevention tips from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Facebook will direct users to the COVID-19 Information Centre. Instagram will also have a similar notification with CDC links. Facebook said it is supporting the global public health community’s work to keep people safe and informed during the coronavirus public health crisis.

“We’re also working to address the long-term impacts by supporting industries in need and making it easier for people to find and offer help in their communities,” the company said in a statement on Thursday. The CDC has reported a new single-day record of COVID-19 cases across the country at 54,357.

According to the update of the CDC website, there are 54,357 new cases and 725 new deaths on Thursday compared to the previous day, Xinhua news agency reported. The recent surge of the pandemic also led to record positive rates and hospitalizations. Hospitals and ICUs are being stretched to capacity in states such as Arizona, Texas and Alabama. According to the CDC, 90,626 cases and 500 deaths of COVID-19 among healthcare personnel have been reported across the country.

While there’s no official tool to hide when you’re online, there’s a sneaky workaround for the iPhone users. Read more here.

If you do not want your friends or colleagues to find out when you last checked WhatsApp, there is a trick for Apple users who are using the latest update iOS 13. While there’s no official tool to hide when you’re online, there’s a sneaky workaround for the iPhone users.

Wait for a message to arrive on your iPhone so a notification appears in your lock screen. Press down on the notification, and the full text will appear and you can scroll down to see the message in full. While you will have read the message, it won’t trigger the blue ticks or show that you were online, reports Mirror.co.uk.

Currently, WhatsApp’s default settings mean your contacts automatically know if you have read their messages and when you were last active on the app. In privacy settings, you can tap ‘Last Seen’ and then Nobody to avoid this, and you can also turn off Read Receipts by pressing the toggle. At the moment, the only official way not to appear ‘online’ or ‘typing’ is to activate Airplane Mode. This WhatsApp trick works on any device that can upgrade to iOS 13.

Good News For ACT Fibernet Broadband Users: Free Upgrades To 300Mbps Speeds And More

At a time when work from home has increased the reliance on a good home broadband line, internet service provider (ISP) ACT Broadband has again announced upgrades for its users which should significantly improve the user experience. The ISP says that ACT Fibernet Broadband users in Delhi will now get free speed upgrades on select plans, at no extra cost. In Delhi, the ACT Fibernet Broadband plans start at Rs 799. The ACT Platinum Promo plan continues to be priced at Rs 1,049 per month and now offers 200Mbps speed instead of 100Mbps that was the speed cap before. There is also 1000GB data bundled, after which the speed will reduce to 1Mbps for the rest of the billing cycle. The ACT Diamond plan will continue to be priced at Rs 1,349 per month and will now offer 300Mbps speed—this is a significant increase from 150Mbps earlier. The data bundled is 1500GB per month.

The ACT Silver Promo, which is the entry spec plan for home broadband subscribers continues to be priced at Rs 799 and offers 100Mbps speed with 500GB data usage per month. Post the exhaustion of the 500GB data, the speed reduces to 512kbps. “As part of our brand promise of Feel the advantage we believe in bringing the best experiences to our customers and as a step to further enhance our customer experience, we have upgraded plans with higher speeds and increased FUP limits. In these times where customers are connected to internet from their home, our high-speed plans will enable superior internet experience especially around work from home, streaming, gaming and e-learning,” says Saurabh Mukherjee, COO, ACT Fibernet.

This move gives ACT Fibernet Broadband a significant advantage over rivals that include Spectra, which offer plans with similar speeds either at higher prices or offer much lesser data limits per month unless you pay in advance for long-term subscriptions in one go. It will be interesting to see if Reliance Jio, Airtel and other fiber broadband players respond to ACT’s speed and data upgrades with broadband plan changes of their own.

Roposo Expects 1 Crore New Users to Join Within One Day of TikTok Ban | Exclusive

Roposo, the video-first Indian social media platform, expects to see close to 1 crore new users join its platform by today itself, just one day after the government of India announced a ban on 59 Chinese apps, of which TikTok was one. Speaking to News18, Mayank Bhangadia, co-founder and chief executive officer of Roposo, says, “Since morning we are witnessing a massive growth in traffic, the nature of which we have not seen before. The surge began since last night, and we expect to ride this wave to add close to 1 crore new users to Roposo by the end of the day.”

Roposo, which has 65 million users on its platform, has reportedly received a significant boost as a result of the ban on Chinese short video social media platforms, such as TikTok, Likee, Bigo Live, Vigo Video and Helo. Bhangadia says that one of the key reasons behind this growth spurt are local content creators. He says, “Over the past four years, we have built our platform from the ground-up keeping content creators at the centre. We have over 30 channels or topics where original content creators publish their work.”

Bhangadia also claims that Roposo offers the best revenue model for content creators in India, in terms of social video apps. “We don’t just reward our top content creators – our model is such that even smaller creators can earn well, given the visibility that they get on our platform. Post the ban, more creators are joining our platform, and they are encouraging their followers to also join them on our platform, which is boosting our numbers,” he says.

Roposo presently has over 65 million users on its platform, with monthly active users count of over 25 million. Bhangadia says that its reach is actually much higher thanks to its parent company, Glance, which is owned by Indian startup, InMobi. “Glance has a daily user base of over 100 million active users, and Roposo’s content is fed into the Glance lock screens. As a result, our reach is over 125 million active users every day,” he adds.

Going forward, Bhangadia says that he expects these numbers to change rapidly in the coming days. He expects this surge to continue in the coming days, as more users would likely look for alternate platforms to post their content on.

Roposo will be competing against other Indian social media platforms such as Chingari, and the more established ShareChat. While the former has been posting numbers such as over 1 million video views by its users in 30 minutes, ShareChat presently has over 60 million monthly active users on its platform, making it the biggest Indian social media platform out there right now.

59 Chinese Apps Banned: TikTok Users, Here's What Will Happen To Your App Now

The government of India has issued a ban on 59 Chinese apps including a host of popular ones, such as TikTok, UC Browser, CamScanner, Shareit, Helo and more. The ban will have caused a considerable ruffling of feathers for Chinese companies operating apps in India, and while we await word from the likes of TikTok and UC Browser on the ban that has been imposed now, one important factor to note is what would happen to the apps for all those users that have already installed them. To understand the sequence of actions for banned apps on Google Play Store and Apple’s iOS App Store, it is important to note that the key factor at play here is data.

Government sources with knowledge of the matter confirmed to News18 that officials are in the process of informing all Indian internet service providers (ISPs) and telecom service providers (TSPs) already, who would be blocking all data and internet traffic to and from these apps. Since most of them work online only (for example, TikTok is a social medium, UC Browser is a content and browsing app and Clash of Kings is an online game), this would imply that all of the apps that have been banned would by default become non-functional.

With TikTok, UC Browser, Shein, Shareit, WeChat and the likes being banned from Indian app stores, what this also means is that none of these apps would receive any developer support in India. As a result, users who have already downloaded these apps would not be able to access app downloads either. This is particularly risky today, since most cyber attacks target unpatched app versions. App updates nowadays carry critical security patches, without which it cannot be advised for anyone to retain these apps.

Previously, when an app would be banned from a region, it would still remain functional if it did not depend on data. While this would hold true for these apps too, since they would no longer be able to access data in the Indian networks, they would be as good as inoperable. However, if a user moves out of Indian network space to countries where these apps are still legally operational, they may be able to use these services once again.

The ban on the 59 Chinese apps comes in light of the Indo-China clash at the Galwan Valley border, amid rising concerns around the world about Chinese cyber espionage. The likes of Bytedance and Xiaomi, which have significant operations in India, will likely face considerable impact as a result of these bans, since their businesses in India run into millions of dollars. While Xiaomi has only had two of their stock apps being banned, it remains to be seen what effect does this have on the pre-bundled software that they provide with their smartphones.

Requests for company inputs to TikTok and UC Browser sent by News18 remained unanswered at the time of reporting.

Gmail Users, Stay Away From Microsoft Outlook & Windows 10 Mail: Issues Have Not Been Fixed

Gmail users continue to face serious issues with the Windows 10 Mail app and now even the Microsoft Outlook email client. After earlier reports and feedback from users that the Windows 10 Mail client was deleting emails from synced Gmail accounts or marking them to spam all on its own, turns out that the Outlook email client is also facing some serious problems handling Gmail accounts right now. This has become a big problem since the latest batch of updates were rolled out for Windows 10 PCs, including the Windows 10 2004 (May 2020) update.

“Actually there are three symptoms/issues. Outlook will randomly crash (seem like when it is trying to get mail). The passwords to my three accounts have to be re-entered frequently even through I have save checked. I have two Gmail accounts set up in Outlook. I’ve had to delete and re-add to get Outlook to retrieve messages,” reports a user DonaldHerbert1 on the Microsoft community forums. A Microsoft Agent on the forums suggests fairly complicated steps to the user to deal with an issue that shouldn’t have happened in the first place. “About Outlook crash issue, if you received any error message when issue occurred, you can share one full screenshot of it with us here for checking. When it crashed, try to use safe mode for test: Right-click the Start button, search and open Run app. Type Outlook.exe /safe, and click OK. Try to reboot device, temporarily disable all antivirus, firewall software for some of them may cause confliction,” is the suggestion.

“After changing my google password, I can no longer send/receive gmail emails on my laptop via my outlook app. When I sync, it states that my gmail account is not available. I can still send/receive on my phone & laptop browser with no issue,” reports another user. Emails not syncing is a big issue for this user, who says, “In recent weeks, all emails that i received during a 2-3 hour interval never made to my outlook 365 inbox. This has happened many times and the emails are there. They appear when I use either gmail or another desktop application that I use.”

Earlier as well, Microsoft had acknowledged the issue with Gmail sync with the Windows 10 Mail app.

“I have done some further study into this problem. The latest version of Windows Mail has broken the settings for Gmail. The automated method for adding the account using the Google link provided by the Mail app no longer works. The best way to work around this is to remove the Gmail account from the Mail app and then re-add it manually via the Other Account POP/IMAP route using the IMAP settings as described in Gmail help,” said Phil C, Insider MVP, in a reply to a Windows 10 user, on the community forums. Basically, the suggestion is that you need to remove your Gmail account from the Mail app and then re-add it as a POP/IMAP account.

At this time, no fix has been rolled out for the Windows 10 Mail issues with Gmail, and none for the Microsoft Outlook sync issues that are also being reported.

There is another problem that Microsoft has to deal with, and that has to do with Gmail re-classifying the Windows 10 Mail app as a less secure app, thereby restricting some functionality at its end to protect your data and privacy. “One other thing you may have to do is change a security setting in Google to allow access to less secure apps. Google now considers the Windows Mail App a less secure app and therefore blocks it from doing some tasks,” says Phil C. So, what does Microsoft suggest for this? They say the best thing to do is use Gmail via the web browser for the time being.

Facebook Dark Mode for Mobile App Rolls Out to More Users

Facebook has started rolling out Dark Mode support on mobile users and the feature is currently live with some users globally. Facebook Dark Mode interface will not be completely black like on Instagram and Messenger but a grayscale design with white accents for logos and icons. The social network confirmed to Social MediaToday that Dark Mode for mobile is live for “a small percentage of users globally right now.”

Facebook has been slow to introduce support for Dark Mode to all of its apps. Some users posted screenshots of Facebook Dark Mode on Twitter, which appears as an option in the Facebook app settings. In May, Facebook rolled out the much-awaited Dark Mode on its revamped and immersive desktop app for all users. The Dark Mode helps users enjoy lower brightness, alongside contrast and vibrancy, thus minimising screen glare for use in low light.

Similar to mobile experience, the new desktop website is faster with new streamlined navigation, easy to find videos, games and Groups, while the home page and page transitions load faster. Reports first appeared in April that Facebook was in the process of developing and designing Dark Mode for its main platform on iOS and iPad.
