Xiaomi Is Working On MIUI Update Which Will Remove All Apps Blocked By The Indian Government

Xiaomi has confirmed that it is working on a new version of the MIUI software for its smartphone line-up, which will remove all the apps that have been blocked by the Government of India. Over the past few weeks, India has blocked multiple Chinese apps owned and developed by Chinese tech companies, over fears about user data privacy and security. The banned apps include popular social media app TikTok, instant messaging app WeChat, as well as AliExpress, UCBrowser and Shein, to name a few. Xiaomi India also confirms that all data of Indian users is stored on servers based in India, and no data is shared with anyone outside the geographical boundaries of India.

“We want to clarify that none of the apps blocked by the Indian Government are available for access on any Xiaomi phones launched in India,” says Xiaomi India in an official statement. They also confirm that they are developing an updated version of MIUI for all Xiaomi phones sold in India which will not pre-install any apps that have been blocked by the Government of India. This update will be rolled out over the next few weeks to all phones in a phased manner.

Xiaomi India also confirms the data localization compliance which requires all data of Indian users to be saved and stored on servers within the geographical boundaries of India. “Even before it was mandated, we pioneered data localization for all Xiaomi India apps and users. Since 2018, 100% of data from Indian users in stored on servers located in India and none of this data is shared with anyone outside of India,” says the company.

Xiaomi is also addressing concerns that the MIUI Cleaner app is in no way related to the Clean Master app that has been blocked in India. Xiaomi says the MIUI cleaner app is only using definitions that are vital to the functioning of the app, and to eliminate the confusion, will be removing those definitions from the MIUI Cleaner app. Users can update the app on their smartphones, or the update will be rolled out as part of the next MIUI version as well.

It’s the second and last day for the Amazon Prime Day sale which continues to offer thousands of products on deals and offers. From smartphones to smart TVs, laptops to IoT and smart devices, there are some decent deals that you can get. Amazon has partnered with HDFC Bank to offer a 10-percent instant discount if you happen to use the bank’s credit card or debit card. Additionally, there will be no-cost EMI options as well as 5-percent reward point and 5-percent instant discount for Amazon Pay ICICI Bank credit card owners.

The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has forced most of us to stay and work from home. This has also led to an increase in consumption of laptops. So, if you are looking for the right notebook, here are some good options for you:

Mi NoteBook 14

Fairly new to the Indian market, Xiaomi’s Mi NoteBook range is on sale. Notably, there is no special deal or discount but, you can get up to 10-percent off if you opt to pay using an HDFC Bank card. The Intel Core i5 options are available on both the Mi NoteBook 14 and Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition at Rs 41,999 and Rs 52,999 respectively. The Core i7 option is also available, however it will only be available post August 9.

HP Pavilion x360

If you are looking for a 2-in-1 laptop primarily for basic workloads and multimedia consumption, then HP has its new Pavilion x360. Priced at Rs 48,990, the notebook comes with the latest 10th-gen Intel Core i3-10110U processor and also comes with Alexa voice assistant built-in.

ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14

If you are looking for a powerful notebook that you can game on, as well as have a style quotient, then the all-new ROG Zephyrus G14 is the one you should get. The notebook comes with a striking design including a unique AniMe Matrix LED pattern on the lid. Announced just yesterday in India, it is offered with the top of the line AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS processor and up to an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 GPU. Pricing starts at Rs 98,990 and Rs 80,990 without the AniMe Matrix LEDs.

HP Pavilion Gaming 15

HP has introduced the new Pavilion Gaming notebook in India, but the last-gen variant with the 9th-gen Intel Core processor option is still up for sale. One of the variants, offering a 144Hz panel along with a Core i7 processor and Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 is available at Rs 89,990, which in our opinion, sounds like a decent deal.

South Korean smartphone manufacturer Samsung has surpassed Xiaomi to regain its top spot in the overall handset market in India in the April-June period, according to a report by research firm International Data Corporation. Notably, Xiaomi’s slip from the top spot, a position it firmly held for the last two years, is interesting given the dispute between India and China following the border skirmishes in the Galwan Valley. It is safe to assume that Xiaomi along with other Chinese companies may continue to face a bigger hurdle in the coming days.

In the overall phone market, which takes into account both the feature and smartphones, Samsung has a market share of 24 percent followed by Xiaomi and Vivo. While Samsung still trails in the Indian smartphone segment with 26.3 market share as opposed to Xiaomi’s 29.4 percent, the former has indeed made a strong comeback as against 18.9 percent in the previous quarter, per IDC report. Samsung’s Galaxy M21 smartphone India’s top 5 shipped models in Q2 2020, the report further added. As far as Xiaomi and Vivo are concerned, the Chinese phone makers ended the quarter with 29.4 and 17.5 percent smartphone market shares respectively.

Coming to Xiaomi, the volume of the overall shipments by the Chinese smartphone maker fell by 48.7% to 5.4 million units in the second quarter. The report says that the company’s Redmi Note 8A Dual, Note 8, Note 9 Pro, and Redmi 8 smartphone models accounted for a 21.8% market share.

Another Chinese smartphone manufacturer Realme captured the fourth position with 1.78 million units in the Q2 2020, witnessing a sharp dip of 37 percent on year. Realme’s affordable C3 and C2 devices accounted for 36 percent of its shipments, followed by its newly launched Narzo series smartphones. Oppo, on the other hand, took the fifth position, witnessing a 51 percent decline on year to 1.76 million units in the same quarter.

While IDC says that the smartphone sector is expected to show some signs of recovery in the second half of 2020, the Indian smartphone market registered a whopping decline of 50.6 percent in the second quarter of 2020 to 18.2 million units, down from 36.8 million units in 2019.

Mi TV Stick With Android TV 9.0 Launched in India, Competes With Amazon's Fire TV Stick

India widens China app ban to cover more from Xiaomi, Baidu

NEW DELHI India has banned some mobile apps of Chinese companies such as Xiaomi Corp and Baidu Inc, three sources told Reuters on Wednesday, in New Delhi’s latest move to hit Chinese companies following a border clash between the neighbours.

India in June outlawed 59 Chinese apps for threatening the country’s “sovereignty and integrity”, including ByteDance’s video-sharing app TikTok, Alibaba’s UC Browser and Xiaomi’s Mi Community app.

Another ban was imposed in recent weeks on about 47 apps which mostly contained clones, or simply different versions, of the already banned apps, the sources said.

Unlike its June move, the government did not make its latest decision public, but there are a few new apps that have made it to that list, including Xiaomi’s Mi Browser Pro and Baidu’s search apps, the sources said.

It wasn’t immediately clear how many new apps have been affected.

India’s IT Ministry and the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi did not respond to a request for comment. China has previously criticized India’s decision to ban the apps.

A spokesman for Xiaomi in India said the company was trying to understand the development and will take appropriate measures. Baidu declined to comment.

A ban on the Mi Browser, which comes pre-loaded on most Xiaomi smartphones, could potentially mean the Chinese firm will need to stop installing it on new devices it sells in India.

Xiaomi is India’s No.1 smartphone seller with close to 90 million users, according to Hong Kong-based tech researcher Counterpoint.

The bans are part of India’s moves to counter China’s dominant presence in the country’s internet services market following a border clash in June between the two nuclear-armed neighbours in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed.
